Alligator is good. I imagine koala being greasy for some reason, and kangaroo is probably super lean and gamey, like weird venison.

And blooming onions are an abomination against all the rules of nutrition. One from Outback Steakhouse is like 3000 calories or some crazy shit.

It's weird, do people actually assume they're an Australian thing? Nothing in the menu for that place sounds like local food here.

Nah the vast majority of people know it's a schlocky gimmick steakhouse pretending to serve Aussie adjacent cuisine. I think if you asked the average American what Aussies eat they'd say, "I dunno... White people food? Occasionally a kangaroo?"
We eat koalas.
Sounds like an easy way to get STDs but ok.

Isn't it illegal to eat animals classified as vulnerable? Or at least to kill them?

We have wild koalas and what are basically "meat koalas". The former are vulnerable, the latter have been selectively bread since the 30s to yield the highest amount of meat at the cost of them no longer being able to survive in the wild since the 80s.

It's pretty fucked up, what happens to them. Factory koala farms keep them in tiny cages, pumped with antibiotics and with pipes to their stomach so they don't have to be fed or move. The meat is always so stringy, too, though it tastes great. I have had wild koala before, and it is way better. Still stringy and gamy, but way better.

Escaped factory-farmed koalas are what started the drop bear outbreak of the '60s and '70s. Not really a matter for the "laugh thread", guys... :-\

In a happier contribution to the current topic: Vegemite! Vegemite is one of the most Australian of food items, and one that all Australians actually eat. Also I am now seriously tempted to try fairy bread with Vegemite in addition to margarine.

Actually, this is a misconception. Back in the 70s there was a large inspection into the state of koala farming due to workplace hazards. Factory-farm koalas were becoming so muscular and fat that they never would be able to cling to branches, and one of the inspectors infamously remarked to the media "In a years time, these things won't even be koala bears anymore, they will be drop bears.". They did not wind up escaping, that was another event in 1981, but the term was created then.

Most of the worst culprits were shut down for serious animal abuse and also unfair labour practices, but alas, others came to take their places and now we're back to square one. The koala industry is pretty bad, and they are heavy shareholders in the Australian media, so you just never hear about it.   :-\

But yeah, this isn't exactly a laugh topic. I shouldn't bring it up here.

NSFW sound effects:

https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/student-forgets-to-plug-headphones-in-while-watching-porn-in-class/news-story/0cd2f3d4eea12b6d6cc7bba5d6670d00

Dude in class is watching porn, forgets to plug headphones in. People around him start laughing and looking at him, he starts looking around wondering what's up. Poor guy eventually works it out, closes the laptop and he's outta the place (shame for life). BTW Was originally reported in the media as a true story, turns out it was a prank, though only two people in the room were in on it.

I heard rumor kangaroo is pretty tasty, and the wild population was purportedly getting out of hand. Why not kangaroo burgers?

They do that, but most people don't want to eat it all the same.

Its not fair when you edit your post immediately after i start typing :P
Its totally normal where i live for people to keep a freezer full of elk or deer theyve killed or sell it to the local market. The market i work for, admittedly, cant take any more because their locker is full of wild venison. My roommates literally had a freezer full to bursting with their grandpas elk he had yet to bbq. We never did get to cook any up because apparently hes super stingy about it, but my father did make some from a deer that got hit by a truck at the bottom of our driveway, that was pretty tasty, if badly overcooked.

And i totally thought there were restaurants in the US here that sell salvaged roadkill. I could be horribly mistaken but id just accepted that as fact, i dont recall where i got that...

From this? Some restaurants are mentioned in the article.

People here often hunt deer and save the meat. I'm actually promised some by my nominal overboss.

For some reason, this reminds me of the fact that Australia IIRC lost a war. With ostriches or emus. Some gigantic bird.
