Drill sergeants have a strange position to occupy. Even Full Metal Jacket doesn't really treat that version as a good thing, after all, Hartman ultimately drove Pvt. Pile to murder-suicide. Not the picture of a successful training outcome.

Beyond that, there's the typical ambiguity of playing a routine so often that you start to absorb it. If you're gonna be a kill hat you have to get into it to some extent or you won't pull off a convincing performance, but if you get into it too much you'll find that you've actually become an unhinged asshole and all the people in your life who aren't your subordinates will probably take issue with it.

I've also seen concerns from some DIs because they end up coming to like their recruits but can't really show it, and so after training is over they have this weird uneven relationship where the recruits go on hating and fearing the DI, who at this point suddenly treats things normally.

The solution to all this, of course, is to join the Air Force. Their DIs will be far too busy sleeping in and bandaging papercuts to interact with the airmen at all.

The thing that really made me determined to never join short of being drafted are the fucking mindgames. Not the physical components, not the obedience, but the little organizational bullshit like being forced to memorize the exact term which you must use to refer to an NCO from each and every goddamn branch, and they're all different and you get your head ripped off if you get it wrong.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.
