So, 8chan got in shit with some social justicey types recently. I read up on what happened, and some Australians wanted a bunch of what they reckoned was revenge porn taken down. So an administrator had a look at the thread they were pointing to but couldn't see anything, so called back and said there was nothing there. The women replied with the image they took issue with, and it was a screenshot of an anon's file browser, showing a directory full of folders that supposedly contained images of previous partners, ordered alphabetically by name. So the admin explained that the images weren't actually on 8chan, but the mob said that they knew that and wanted him to force that user to delete data from his own hard drive.

I still have no idea how there can be so many people who do not understand how the internet works.

Well, I only heard about it yesterday. That particular branch of internet drama doesn't hold my interest like it used to.

8chan's been getting a lot of flak since Poole left 4chan. The 1337 H4XX0RZ can never catch a break.

Was listening to someone talk about the Lucy movie (2014) and it made me laugh at how much we've driven a bit of science into peoples head over the last few years.

Limitless (2011) - Plot about a man exposed to a drug that lets you use 100% of your brain making him go from normal to essentially superhuman.
Reception: Positive. "Intriguing premise".

Lucy (2014) - Plot about a woman exposed to a drug that lets you use 100% of your brain making her go from normal to literally superhuman.
Reception: Mixed. "Good performance, but bad scientific premise based on a myth".

Over just those few years we managed to break an urban legend and sink a movie! Good going team! :P

Are people seriously criticising Lucy for 'bad science'? She turned into a fucking GOD from having drugs in her liver, and the. Knew everything in the universe.

Oh and also she's chased by korean mobsters who doesn't give a fuck that she can probably go back in time and remove them from existence if she gave a single fuck.

It wasn't a '100% of your brain' thing. It was a nootropic - a sci-fi nootropic, but nonetheless, we have those IRL, and the guy was a superhuman in the sense that he was basically a Hollywood Genius, because he had absurdly high focus/cognitive processing speed/assorted brainstuff.

Lucy, meanwhile, kept banging on about its stupid 10% thing and turned the character into a literal God.

We are doomed. It's just that whatever is going to kill us all just happens to be, from a scientific standpoint, pretty frickin' awesome.

No respect for Romulus and Remus if Romulus kills Remus then sets Rome on fire.

The guy who gets him the drug does spout the '100% of your brain' legend, and a lot of people took umbrage with that when it appeared in the trailer because it seemed like he was explaining the premise of the film, but in context he's a shady drug dealer and is probably not a good source on neurological sciences.
Not exactly pertinent, but I like that film and it was funny to me.
