Well, if there's no cost to the player for being paranoid, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by being eternally ready for everything. Time limits are one way to add such a cost, at least for the players constantly checking every individual brick for traps; making gear cost resources to maintain in readiness is another, albeit a clunky one, but there are ways to make it feel like a benefit.

Like I said, I'm a player, I get it. It's just the older I get, the less important "winning" is to me. At this point I'd rather fail and be entertained than win and be bored. (Given where we are, this will shock no one.)

But that doesn't necessarily describe my group. Veteran gamers with killer instincts and it can sometimes make it hard to run an interesting game as a GM, because they've all powered gamed for so long they steam roll threats and the real "spice" of the game to them is their own antics they cook up. Which sometimes are fun. But the more GM, the more I crave that look of "I don't really know what's about to happen" on my player's faces, because *that's* when I know I truly have their attention.

The real good shit is realizing you don't need to have all your guns at the upper hive party because you can just demand a duel of satisfaction from whoever and bust out the laspistols while not only preserving but gaining social status.

though of course that comes with the risk of being drilled through the eye at 30 paces by a 200-year old duellist...

I was thinking you win the duel, and check the body only to discover blueish skin and what looks like carapace...and an extra arm. And about that time you feel the ovipositor stab you in the back of the neck.

Once the cult has infiltrated the nobility, you're likely to see them using their resources to protect and disguise the low-gens and purestrains as much as possible. If you've got enough money and status to hire a fallen Techpriest who doesn't ask any questions, getting the extra arm amputated and the chitin augmented over with some cosmetic surgery to tie it all together is simple. You're hardly the first noble to have a "mutant baby" get "fixed".

A mildly aware techpriest would reckon the mutations as not "regular" ones.

I think you overstate the knowledge of the common fallen Techpriest. The very existence and scale of the Nids are a state secret, and it's a big galaxy. If publicly advertising for the "Cult of the Four-Armed Emperor" isn't enough to rouse local suspicion, then some random mutant noble won't do the job either.

If anything, our prospective enabler Techpriest could get double-blinded, by keeping on the lookout for obviously supernatural chaos mutations and thus dismissing the entirely mundane genestealer "mutations".

Huh. That gives me the idea for a character for an RPG or something, where it's a noble with roboty parts implanted just after their birth to cover up mutations.

We interrupt this firestorm of, frankly, heresy, to bring you this:

You can add Titans to the roster of shit we can now enjoy playing in the 40k Gameperium. The Emperor commanded the flood gates to open, and lo, did the licenses pour forth unto the masses.

Anyways:

Certainly. But decadent weirdos also fits in the same space. Hubris. In one of the Commissar Cain novels, the Planetary Governor is a low gen with a third appendage and uses it to blast a Tau emissary in the middle of a meet and greet in the throne room.

Personally I'll take my half breeds with a little lace.
