Question before this argument gets any worse:

Why do you care?

Either of you?

What difference does it make?

People who are looking to talk about 40k will search it. People who aren't, won't. Either way, this thread can be found.

my level of caring was really the one line i wrote before. I just like to see things in the boards they most fit in. I often search by board and not entire forum, depending on what I'm looking for. Things being in the right board just makes stuff easier to find in the long run.

The follow up is less about caring where the thread is, as it is curiosity in trying to better understand where OP's coming from. I just don't get why he's adamant it must be in this board.

See, there's this thing called neurosis, and the kind of people susceptible to it generally play games where you fiddle with a lot of little mechanics...

Hah.

I personally enjoy it being here, as have the last three pages of people.

Yeah, he's a banned spammer. Normally we'd delete this thread too, but people were having too much fun with it by the time we got here.

So, I've been considering 40K wargaming, specifically with the Imperial Guard. I have never played before and I have no idea how to get started, except that I know where I can play and am planning on not spending irresponsible quantities of money on it.

Any advice?

Impossible.
I really don't think it's worth it at this stage, to be frank, which is quite a shame.

Only because I don't have irresponsible amounts of money or the ability to get a loan. I was thinking of breaking and entering instead.

Well, that sucks. Is it because of the more recent edition stuff which seems to be a thing though I don't know enough to be sure?

If you must...go for Grey Knights.

That way you will spend slightly less irresponsible amounts of money on it.

But in reality? Go for the RPGs, since they're on the forums and the pdfs can often be found for free and/or far far far cheaper. Only War, Dark Heresy, Deathwatch.

I think buying online is often cheaper than in the store, and there are sites where you can get miniatures and other stuff cheaper.

There's probably others around, quick googling should tell you what's available to your region.

As for what to buy, I think picking up the main rulebook and IG codex would get you a long way, they contain info on how to build an army I think. After that, just get a few basic sets (eg guardsman squad) and practice your painting a bit (or buy painted figs from the net, expensive though I think).

But, as others said, there's options besides the tabletop that don't require you to give up a crack addiction's worth of money.

You could probably buy a 3d printer and make your own models for the price of a decent army.

You could probably hire an actual army for the price of an average 40K army.

If the 40K fanbase stopped buying stuff from GW for a few weeks, they'd have amassed enough wealth to pay a PMC to do a hostile takeover of their company headquarters and declare it a sovereign country.
