PC Building, Purchasing and Rating thread
« on: June 25, 2014, 10:33:52 pm »

So I suddenly got a lot of money, I am going to burn some of it on a new computer.
So I looked at my local computer store that has a quite good reputation for building beast rigs.
Then I went like "Holy shit this computer can run Crysis" then my friend was like "No, Crysis runs really bad on Titans"

So I got really confused, how come a card that beefy cant even run Crysis? Does that mean it wont run other, older games either?
So I cant play Empire Earth or Half-life? That would suck really much. So uhh, yeah. can someone please give me some advice on the new card?

Games I want to play:
HL2, HL2:EP1 HL2:EP2
All other sorts of source games
Crysis
Half-life
Empire Earth and other assorted RTS's like Rise of Nations
Dwarf Fortress
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
Beefy rig games like Just Cause 2 and Saints Row 3
Anything

It...could help a lot more if you gave details about the specifications needed about the game and the computer/graphics card you're thinking in question. Helps a lot more than giving vague adjectives like Beefy or such. o-o

Addendum: You could've also asked why he said such. :P

You'd be able to run all of those games on a much cheaper graphics card. I'm on a GTS 250, and I can run all of those games (though I've never tried running Crysis or Cataclysm). I can manage Just Cause 2 with lower settings, and the rest on medium-high.

What do you mean about specific details? I can post all of the specs here if you want:

Intel Core I7-4790K at 4x4.5 GHz
Antac Kuhler H20 950 Water Cooling
Asus Maximus VII Ranger
2 x Kingston 8GB DDR3-2400 HyperX Beast XMP
Samsung 840 EVO 500GB SSD
Asus GeForce GTX 780Ti OC 3GB
Seasonic 750RT 80 Gold powersupply
Asus ROG SupremeFX 2014 sound card
Asus 24x DVD-burner

I am really hardware iliterate so half of this shit is gibberish to me anyways. I couldnt build a computer for the life of me.

I dont have a choice, it is the only computer with Devils Canyon in it, and I REALLY want Devils Canyon.

I can play all of these at 60fps, and mine's a GeForce GTX 660. You can go much cheaper.

You can probably save a lot of money by customizing your parts, if they don't do that.

They do customize some parts, but not all. I really only have this choice because I cant build a computer even if my life depended on it. I just suck at everything that is fragile and sensitive, one fuckup, one accidental touch of a chip and your super expensive card is ded

Most computer parts are a lot more durable than you're giving them credit for.

Note that 'running Crysis' isn't really that great of a benchmark tool.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html  isn't that great/specific either but gives you a general idea and price / card comparisons (and just from that I'd probably go with a 770)

That doesnt convince me to build it on my own. Besides, I tried to see what it would cost in another computer shop in separate parts, I couldnt find the same PSU so I decided to drop that.
My bugdet is pretty much unlimited anyway, and I really want a computer that can keep going for a few years instead of some card that will be outdated the next year.

Here, try this website, Logical Increments. It provides recommendations based on the performance you want, and gives price tags for stuff. It's good for stuff other than graphics card, but it has that too.

In relation to this, the GTX 660M is also remarkably good for a laptop card. Ofc. DF is almost never going to be GPU-bound, same for Cata:DDA. But yeah, just off the top of my head, I get 60fps with Far Cry 3 on all very high-ultra settings. Just because a given card is the 'best' doesn't mean that you can't get the same or better effect for less.

How many times do I have to say that I do not have any other option than this?

You have the option of installing a different card.

That aside, this is why it's good to do research into games. Quite often a given game will have some sort of issue with a part of your system, and careful web searching can usually give you a fix or workaround. With games which are sufficiently old, you might not be able to run them without setting up a virtual machine to run an older OS/use DOSbox. We can't help you if you just say 'halp guys friend says my box can't run [game X]'. If you have the game and it won't run, describe what happens when you try to run it for us. Search the internet for issues relating to the game and your card/computer model. If all you have to go on is the word of a friend, try doing some research instead of trusting blindly. :)

Apparently it is only an issue with Crysis and most of the compatibility problems are getting worked on and stuff.
I could actually just set up Crysis to be software accellerated and my beast of a rig will run it.

See? With a box like that, 95% of the cases where you can't run something will be because of some sort of compatibility issue relating to the software, rather than the hardware not being good enough.
