Darkfall! :P

if you want something less "hardcorish" then Black gold online just went into open beta though it's the biggest amount of fluff i've seen in a while.

If you want to drop an M, there are games like Spiral Knights. It's mission-based, so no wandering around in an open world.

Guild Wars (1 and 2) lack subscriptions, so they're free once you buy the game. I played the original and loved it. some of my coworkers play 2 and love it as well.

I bought The Secret World a while back and there's no sub fee for that either once you've purchased the game. I've basically stopped playing, though. Great setting, meh gameplay.

There are also the myriad of free-to-plays. I've been meaning to get back into Lord of the Rings Online. An old college classmate used to love D&D Online.

Games that lack subscriptions aren't free-to-play games... Why do people keep saying Guild Wars is free? It's not.

Only 2 games mentioned in here are free... The OP clearly stated he wants free games.

OP clearly stated games like WoW/UO, but preferably free. Simple reading comprehension tells me that nonfree is okay, though not preferred.

Also, no one ever said Guild Wars was free. The exact phrasing was "they're free once you buy the game." What the hell else am I supposed to say? You pay a subscription fee of $0 every month, so it's not free?

Yeah GW2 totally meets this, F2P is generally worse than buying a game and being able to play it forever. Anyway, I'd recommend Lord of the Rings Online, personally, I used to love it because progression is done so much more smoothly than most mmos I've played and the locations are all really nice with interesting quests. Only mmorpg I've actually reached max level in.

There is no subscription. Its like buying a console game or game off steam. Buy once then that is it.

Unless you steal games, guess that is free.

Anyway. Gw2 is good, but out of all of them. I loved lotr the most for MMOs.
