chopping enough trees in a specific amount of time(everytime their diplomat comes and demands i limit my tree cutting i see it as a quest with a time limit, not as a warning),waiting for their merchants to arrive and setting a pit trap near the depot...

1) Set elves to babysnatcher which will put you at constant mild conflict with them no matter what, like goblins.
2) use legends to find a time when you're also at war with elves, then regen the same world seed and run it until that year, then embark at war with elves. I think this encourages even more sieges. Maybe not. Only one of these 3 methods that doesn't use modding though and can be done by itself. (note: tree cutting diplomacy ALSO requires modding, so if you're doing it anyway why not just add babysnatcher)
3) If you want to do a more drastic mod, simply mod elves to have a pet tag and be domestic animals, and you can buy them at embark.

Also, I'm pretty sure murdering merchants is COMPLETELY ignored by them (with the exception of bringing fewer trade goods, which is most likely linked to the loss of profit, not the lost lives). I've killed 10 years worth of elf merchants before and they didn't bat an eyelash.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

personally,i am one step away from disabling tree cap diplomacy from them.then they would be as thin-skinned as the humans, and everything would be way more !!FUN!!

Why would you want to import those tree fondling hippies?

Unless it was for a magma thunderdome with elves and magma sharks...
Someone should do that.

I don't understand why you need magma.

Well done OP, you've inadvertently weaponized ghosts.

it's the number of chopped trees that they ignore, unless you've fixed that with dfhack. Killing their caravans repeatedly make them siege you.

perhaps you should be more persistent. I seem to remember being sieged by elves in the latest version- they brought 3 squads with mounted leaders and rushed right into the same bridge-grinder that killed their caravan. Though my memory might be failing me and it was actually the version before this.

my typical interaction with elves is:

1)offer them wood items
2)seize their items when they refuse to trade
3)use them as target practice

is tree cutting worse than robbery and mass elf slaughter in their book?

strictly speaking, it is

[ETHIC:KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER:JUSTIFIED_IF_EXTREME_REASON]
[ETHIC:THEFT:PUNISH_REPRIMAND]
[ETHIC:ASSAULT:PUNISH_EXILE]
[ETHIC:KILL_PLANT:UNTHINKABLE]

However, afaik they don't currently get angry at you for chopping trees because a bug prevents them from establishing a cap on the number of cut tress in the first place

Maybe that will be fixed in the next release? We can only hope---

I want to see how the new "recognition with multiple emotional reactions" code works, when elves see not only that the bolts that are stuck into their BFF came from one of their beloved named trees, but are embellished with elf bones from their comrades-- as they watch their BFF die.

ethics,eh?that makes perfect sense.so if i copy the ethics from the humans and bully them,i'm gonna have all the elven ambushes i need?worth trying out!

as for the bug...no big deal,as you mentioned there is a dfhack script to fix this.i guess most(if not all) of us use dfhack anyway

actually humans have
[ETHIC:KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER:JUSTIFIED_IF_GOOD_REASON]
which  seems to be more acceptable than elves'
[ETHIC:KILL_ENTITY_MEMBER:JUSTIFIED_IF_EXTREME_REASON]
So I really don't understand why humans react more violently to your transgressions than elves. Might it have anything to do with their self-perceived military strength vs your civ?

i gave the elves steel making and a whole new range of melee weapons, along with some bonuses to dodge and archery.maybe tree cap diplomacy has as a side effect that they take offense to tree cutting and tree cutting only?the only situation where i received an elven ambush was when i deliberately broke the cap(always 100 trees).one ambush, and then they were back to trading as usual.i don't know why,but my elves are losers.

If you want hostile elves, these are good options. You could also make an extremely savage world and look around for an elf-dwarf war in worldgen. Natural animals won't kill elves in worldgen, so they tend to be more powerful the more savage the world.

If you want elves for pets, just mod their creature entry with [PET].
