GOG.com conference June 5th - 'Next Step for GOG.com'
« on: June 03, 2014, 02:33:16 pm »

Upcoming CDProjekt / GOG.com conference this week.  Announcements about CDProjekt's new Witcher and cyberpunk games.  Also, apparently announcing the 'new technology taking GOG.com to the next level'.   ???

Given GOG's history of overhype, we're probably going to hear about an updated install configuration. Or something equally boring. ::)  But there's a possibility of an optional client, so the forums are flexing their FUD muscles.

I'd appreciate a client, it would make it more likely for me to buy from them.

If they somehow could trigger launch's/installs of my steam games too, then I'd be all over them.   :P

Urgh, I do nottttt want a client. That is literally the last thing in the world I want (unless they had some awesome multiplayer integration sorted).

Even though I trust and love GOG, I really don't need another thing trying to auto-update itself and run on start up/in the background all the time. Even if they start off meaning well, I can imagine it's only a matter of time before someone says 'we could make more money if...' and they add on all the annoying extras.

For me, I'd just like them to work on getting some updates for older games. There must be a couple of big sellers which would benefit massively from a patch/expansion or two, and that'd be something I'd definitely be willing to pay for.

GOG games are ridiculously easy to pirate, so a client that prevents piracy while also eliminating the need for DRM would be awesome for the industry.

If the client prevented piracy somehow (how would it even do that?) it would be DRM by definition.

Would be sad to see the most successful, mostly mainstream, non-client-based DRM game vendor join the pack. But I appreciate it's their right to do so, and probably in their best interest to. That said, I don't need or want another client. I still get a little annoyed when I have to launch Desura. In truth the only reason I have any games on GoG is a) King of Dragon Pass and b) Witcher 2 wouldn't run through Steam. So this affects me pretty minimally. (If it is indeed an announcement and not GoG going into game publishing, or some such.)

And yet GOG is still in business and growing. WONDER OF WONDERS. Their stance on DRM has worked.

I don't see what the big deal is about a client, I'm sure they wouldn't take away the normal(I'm assuming web-based) way of downloading their games.

If there is indeed a client, who cares as long as it's optional.

If there is indeed a client, who cares as long as it's optional.

Because it'll graddddually move towards that. First it'll be some special offer, then it'll be all the special offers, then the only way to find new releases will be through the client and so on. It might take longer with GOG, but it'll eventually get there, especially when they get multiplayer functionality within the client.

It makes a lot of sense business-wise as it ties consumers into loading up your product where you can advertise to your hearts content, DRM, and all the other stuff that goes along with Steam/Origin - hence why everyone is trying to do it these days (crytek for starters).

GOG may be growing, but it's not growing like Steam is/has been growing.

Good Old Games should totally introduce a custom multiplayer system for their stuff. Then they can be Multiplayer Activated Good Old Games, or something along those lines.

Probably something mundane, like GOG offering Amiga titles.  Or GOG Wallet.  Or maybe they'll take Bitcoins.

Oops. I misspoke. I meant -intrusive- DRM. For me, Steam's DRM is so light I only notice it when there's an internet outage and that's only happened to me a few times.

Clever  :o

And yeah, it's probably just something boring like a new download system, or maybe a mobile app or something.
