Challenging False Deities.
« on: May 04, 2014, 10:20:51 pm »

I was playing Masterwork earlier today, and after getting frustrated trying to embark on a necromancer tower I decided to try being an adventurer. I chose to be an uruk ronin swordsorc and starting doing quests. Eventually I was trying to find some bandit leader in some catacombs and after killing five other bandit leaders and getting lost multiple times I decided to make sure my quest was what I thought it was. However when I asked about a quest I was instead directed to go somewhere and talk to someone who would give me a quest that sounded really important. I got to the castle and while unlikely to be important, there was only one person in the keep who of course was the guy (his position was lord) I needed to talk to.

Now I was really excited when I went through the dialogue so I sent it all in a message to a friend of mine, here's what the guy said "You have done a great many wondrous deeds." "The quest I will now give you will see your name forever in the stars or lost in the dust as the ages roll." "I am speaking for The Mellow Nation." "An evil lurks within." "Sleevedfortunes is a day's travel to the north." "Seek this place and confront Pufe Brewglide the Windy Crown of Razors the giantess." "None of us are brave enough to level an accusation against the beast, but since you would help us that is what I ask of you." "It would honor me greatly if you would bring some of my soldiers along with you.". So I have all the soldiers in that castle join me and I travel to the other castle and when i get there I recruit even more people getting 17 people following me which was quite surprising as I've never had more than 4 before this adventurer. I attempt to get everybody into the very inconvenient room that the giantess queen is in, but I only managed to get 11 into the room since it was a very bad location. Then I start talking to the giant and try every dialogue option except for accuse of being a night creature since I expected that would be the choice that starts the fight. Strangely when I chose service she told me to go talk to the guy who told me to kill her in the same way that the random guard did earlier. Anyway I try the accuse of being a night creature option, and she denies it the same way anybody does. So now I'm quite confused. I had expected this possibility, but was quite scared of the idea of just attacking her so I saved the game and made a copy of the save. I load the game again and attack the giant. I am immediately given 12 death threats and find that my attack was deflected by the giant's clothes, and am then attacked a lot. At that point I knew that even if I did kill the giant there would be no point to it so I give in to starvation.

Now the point of this story is to ask if anybody else has ever seen this and if they have, if they were able to successfully challenge the false deity. If nobody has been able to challenge it then this can hopefully remind Toady to fix this quest. It might be a Masterwork thing, but I know quite a lot about modding DF and I am quite sure that this is far beyond the scope of modding.

I would agree this is beyond the scope of modding (unless for some reason the gods/demons are replaced by some mod creature, but I don't think that's the case).  I'm just surprised you got the quest to kill him, I've never gotten a quest for a god impersonator, I get "we are quite untroubled here" first.

Were you able to legitimately challenge it? Or did you just attack it? I tried every option and none of them began a fight with the giant, but if there was one that I somehow missed or didn't show up due to a bug, it would be good to know about it.

I was messing around with that adventurer a bit recently and found that when the giant went to sleep I was just able to cut her head off. Everybody still turned hostile to me, but due to the circumstances I managed to make it back to the guy who gave me the quest. He didn't talk to me either. But I did get another quest upon killing him ehich was to report his death. Which is very strange since as I believe that you can get that for killing things you didn't have quests to kill, but only if it was possible to get a quest to kill them. Like I reported the deaths of 5 bandit leaders that were in those catacombs and only had two quests, but the weird thing is that that means at some point I could have gotten a quest to kill him. Using the zoom to selected feature I found that I was supposed to report the death of the giant to the person who gave it to me, but there's no location zoomed to when I select the quest to report the death of the lord.

I and my squad atacked him, then we got "bad creature" sentence.. They join to me, but... died very fast.

I got told to challenge a false diety. It worked out pretty well. I wore mithril armor and used the dual chain blades. I became Kratos. Annihilated him (it was a Deep Crow), fought my way out of the fort and traveled across the land to another kingdom. The original kingdom hates me now, so I feel like Batman.

What did you do that got your squad to attack with you rather than try to kill you?
