Armour/weapons from reclaimed fortress unusable?
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:35:11 am »

In short: Millitary dwarves are unable to equip armour and weapons from reclaimed fortress. They are however able to equip stuff brought on embark. Is this a (known?) bug or my mistake?

I've lost a nice fortress in a great location (volcano, iron, flux and coal) to an undead siege. Managed to reclaim it (whacked the necromancer immediately after arrival) and bring some order. I used three hammerdwarves with silver hammers and copper armour which they duly put on. However, I recovered a cornucopia of steel armour and weapons from the reclaimed fortress and changed my squads uniform to steel equipment. This resulted in my dwarves charging the next kobold thief in the ancient dwarven fashion: butt-naked and empty handed. Switching back to metal equipment without specifying steel makes them equip their silver/copper starting stuff. When trying to assign equipment directly items from before reclaim are not on the list.

Is this a known bug? I guess that decorating items would make DF consider them as new ones and available for equiping. Any other workarounds?

Items are forbidden and scattered on reclaim. Have you unforbidden them?

Are they stored on the ground of your stockpiles, or inside of containers in your stockpiles ?

I'm asking because there's a bug regarding bins as containers (and maybe some other kind of containers), i had a problem in a previous fort in which my marksdwarves would not use a single of my hundred of stocked bolts, only because they were inside bins, while once the bolts were on the ground, they would use them.

Could this be as there is a job queued up for the item to be stocked in a bin or pile somewhere, meaning a dorf wont touch it until that job is cleared by it being stored?

I've run into this problem as well. Bins have some very buggy behavior. When I first discovered bins and put them into use literally everywhere thinking that they would be great, it actually almost brought my fortress to its knees with all the crazy inexplicable cancellation spam and my military dwarves being unable to find ammo and gear. I swear those bins have decreased my fort's efficiency at storing items to a fraction of what it once was when I just had these crazy large stock piles as far as the eye could see and everything was just laying out on the floor. Getting my millitary dwarves to get their ammo from the stockpile bins was almost impossible. I'm not sure I ever really solved the problem. I just made more bolts. I think those original hundreds they couldn't reach are probably still sitting unusably in some bin somewhere.

What happens if you go into the military equip menu for a specific item and try to select one of these unusable items for use? Do they show up in that menu at all or do you get a problem where after assigning the item from the list the dwarf responds with a job cancellation?

Ever since version 0.34.07, bins have been pretty much broken, since dwarves wanting to put items into a bin will pick up the bin itself and carry it to whatever items they want to stuff into it, then carry it back. The problem, of course, is that nobody else can access other items in the bin until said hauler is done, and that bin might be really heavy, making it take even longer than just making a separate trip for each individual item (whether made by one hauler or by a bunch) which is how it worked previously. The same problem also happens with bags (containing plant seeds) and barrels/pots (containing food).

Unfortunately, there is no option to disable the "new" hauling behavior.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

All these items are stored in bins, yet only some are unequipable. That makes me skeptical whether this is a symptom of generic bugs with bins. There are 8 bins of unequipable weapons so it's nigh impossible that all all marked for hauling at the same time.

Unequipable items do not show on the list.

Equipable (that is brought on embark or forged later) and unequipable (present when abandoning the fortress) seem to be segregated into separated bins. It is possible that this is a coincidence (I've reclaimed all scattered weapons and armour before forging any of my own) but IMHO this points in the direction of reclaiming fortresses being bugged.

I'll try moving all items to a non-bin stockpile and see if that helps.

Are you perhaps talking about certain types of armour and weapons? I know my dwarves haven't wanted to wear a full (glove, chest, leg, feet, shield, helmet) for a few versions. I usually only succeed in getting them to wear greaves, a shield and a breastplate.

Bins - they know we feel this. I bet it's bins. They are the doom of every sophisticated fortress.

After my weaponsmith started tantruming when one of her masterwork something-or-others was stolen because a hauler was spooked by an animal and dropped the bin containing it near the edge of the map I've started splitting my stockpiles, one part with bins and one without. The part with bins only accepts items from the part without. Seems to help in both making hauling quicker and avoiding the constant cancellation because «some idiot ran off with the bin containing the item I need».
