Ignore the other camp, grab what we came for, and head back.
This, but do the soul devouring far outside our cave, ready to ride off into the sunset safety.

Gentlemen, something we have to consider before attempting to enslave a soul:
a) If we intend to eat it, we won't regain mana, as the campers were clearly not spoellcasters.
b) if we want to enslave it, then it will cause us to use mana, that we want o eventually spend on making our horse permanent.

B-but that delicious soul...

Right. No soul eating today, rest and recover mana till you can make horse permanent. Scout around the cave entrance, look for any signs that this cave has been used recently.

Why would they not have mana just because they aren't spellcasters?  We haven't seen anything so far to suggest that.

Let's put it like this: not being spellcasters, mana received is likely going to be inferior than the spell cost.

Take their skulls and leave.

We need their meat as well. We want to hunker down in the cave and lay low for at least a few days to heal.

The Plains of Grating, Fifth Age
The Age of Death, Year 625

Day 3, Late Morning

Unsure about the prospect of waging combat yet again, you decide to leave it be. For now. You reach the camp shortly thereafter and find it just as you have left it. Well, almost – the corpses having lured some flies to them during the daytime, not a surprising turn of events, really.

You are itching to try out your new spell, maybe even making your horse permanent, but the possibility of creating a wraith is something you dislike. True enough, you could just turn the wraith, but it is still a risk. Ultimately unsure about what to do, you load up the two corpses onto the horse, bind them there with the rope, and hop on yourself. It will take longer to get back with three bodies weighing down the horse, but you are confident that it can make it.

Soon enough you are back by the river, and on your way to the mountains again. It really drags on longer than previously, and you are somewhat bored of travelling by now. If it is because of your reduced speed, or you looking around in your boredom you do not know – either way, you find a cracked-open geode of amethyst. While only a semi-precious gem, it should be able to hold about 30 mana, if you were to store it with your spell. Since there are no possible downsides, you just put it in the saddlebag and carry on.

As dawn breaks, you are actually a bit shocked by the lack of your progress. While the horse had no real problem with the burden, it is not until the very late morning hours that you are back at your cave. Befitting the time, you also feel a bit peckish by now...

Cash in the 15 mana in the ring. That should give us enough to make the horse permanent, which we should do at once.

Then spend a few days lying low and healing. Eat the corpses as you get hungry. Practice with the bow and wooden arrows until all the wood tipped arrows break. Perhaps climb higher to the summit or another good vantage point at night for a look around. It would be nice to know what lies on the other side of the mountains, and we may be able to spot some of the human settlements on the other peaks from there as well.

Charge up the gem when you have the mana for it. An emergency battery would be nice.

We just need to bide our time a bit longer, and then our reign of terror can begin anew.
