I think it's optimistic to think that he'll fix every bug, ever.
Well, if we can somehow give him immortality.....

he'll just add new features forever and hence more bugs..
But old bugs will die.

I mean you can today reasonably expect a dwarf not to put themselves on the wrong side of a flood-gate, or run through fire. That's progress.

Less ways for dwarves to stupidly die? Progress!?

I'm betting 2014 is optimistic, especially if we factor the bug fixes and 3rd party tool updates that will inevitably be needed.

3rd party tool updates? Toady doesn't care about those one bit (and I don't blame him at all).

Also, bugfixes historically have never taken more than 3-4 months.
Historically, none of the releases have ever taken as long as this one.

Alas today was the day I bet on, Cinco de Mayo. I always knew it was a bit optimistic.

Alas, if we're lucky Melting Sky will be but a sole day off.

If we're less lucky, two, or perhaps a day and a half.

Alas, all hope is not yet lost.  The new release may already be finished, but Toady is exploiting a bug that lets it incorporate future bug-fixes up until the point it is observed by the players.

I would say maybe the tenth of may judging by how things are going or the twelfth at the most but honestly it could come even sooner then either of those.

Also can i sig this?

I mean you can today reasonably expect a dwarf not to put themselves on the wrong side of a flood-gate, or run through fire. That's progress.

Toady hasn't given any indication on how long the bug list is, has he?  He seems to be making good progress, but without a goal to shoot for we've unfortunately got no idea how long it might take.  I wish he'd give a vague hint, but I understand why he chooses not to.

Regardless, I'd be pretty surprised if it took more than a month from now.  While the development cycle for this version of the game has taken longer than any other, I doubt the bugs are as serious as the move from 2D to 3D for example.

I've said why I don't think it's as bad as 0.31.01, either.

Now all I need to do is try to wrap this up before we cross over any more anniversary milestones.

- Toady, from the last month report

So I would guess right on the 4th of June then, for the 2 year anniversary

My money is on release coming 48 hours after the nukes stop falling.  Survivors of the apocalypse (or metalocalypse) may have slight troubles downloading it.

You've got it in the wrong order. Release. Then Apocalypse.

Future historians (Sewer dwellers) will try to discover what the relation was between the two.
