I played two and a half times as a part of a summer survival camp. The 'half' part was when we've been taken to a forest near the encampment and had to run/sneak back while the instructors were the only ones armed.

As for the pain, the one time with 'half' I was hit from five meters or so in the back, it was the only time it actually hurt, though it hurt like a motherfucker. But once we had proper matches we were issued army pants and jackets over our clothes, and it felt more like being slapped by a toddler then.

Though, both of those were in natural environment (which, among others, resulted in a loooooong exchange of fire with an unseen enemy who later turned out to be a teammate), I'd love to try playing in more manmade conditions.

In most games, I'm usually wearing jeans, long-sleeve, a sweater, and maybe a full-body camo or coveralls (or as camo I can get with a green or brown suit). Not really much armor, when you come and think of it; but I don't want to dress in warm weather like I do for winter. I want to be able to move and not want to pass out without getting shot at (it gets warm down here).

BTW, I've become a bit of a masochist, so getting shot at doesn't bother me as much as it should (plus, work and a few accidental hits from working helped me build up a pain tolerance), which plays to my advantage armor-wise. I don't need as much to withstand a shot, just enough to not feel the full impact, but also still provide me the flexibility I need to haul ass towards cover, and still work well enough for being stationary for a good few minutes without detection.

Woo paintball! Love it. In response to some earlier questions, how painful it is depends on the ball grade - Stingers are fucking horrible to take, while softer ones don't really hurt unless they hit you in the fingers. That's bad - they swell like you won't believe.

Here in Russia, people also play strikeball - military sports with electric-driven guns that shoot plastic balls - and the really masochistic play hardball, which is the same but with air rifles. Do any of you have those games where you live?

Over here, a person who refuses to go down when shot is called a McLeod. It's recommended to shoot him in the face, repeatedly.

I live in Australia. It's a miracle that even paintball and laser tag is legal. Airsoft? Forget it. :'(

I'm a pretty serious player I think. On a team and such. As to pain, it feels like getting stung by a bee but goes away much quicker. Paintball grade does change it too, stingers do feel like getting hit with a fucking rock while most empire paint is alot better.

From the dabbling experience I've had with each, I'd have to say I prefer airsoft over paintball. It's less horrifically painful and also feels more like I'm doing something that makes sense, rather than running around in a mix of terror and excitement and pain.

I play airsoft a lot on weekends. Trying to save up for a new airsoft gun, right now I just have a sawed-off walmart m4.
And a camo-painted tower shield.

I have a few good stories, like this one time the entire field was covered in ice, so we called it operation slip and slide. I used my shield like a snowboard down a hill and managed to get a kill that way.

There was also one time I accidentally stepped on a wasp nest during a game and got stung 36 times. Thought I was shot at first, but I kept playing and my team won that game.

I'm quite the opposite really, everytime I play airsoft its never a game, just running around the yard shooting each other while yelling.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

When I went paintballing, it all seemed fairly structured, although that could just be the group I was with. Much closer to an unplanned military operation lead by a competent officer than a bunch of blokes on a field shooting wildly at each other.

This made me feel better, as now I know I'm not the only one to bring a shield to a gun fight.
Those things are the best.
Never played paintball, but I played airsoft (that was when I had the shield). The shield took so many hits that I lost count, but I myself only get hit maybe once the entire time. I also shot one guy in the neck at point-blank range by mistake, but he was one of the SUPER SERIOUS types that had actual armor on, and didn't even acknowledge it. Unlike me, who was in a t-shirt.
Although probably the best part about having a shield is the fact that I'm super flexible with my arms, so I could twist it around me to protect me from any angle without even slowing me down. Although the gun I had was the worse I've ever tried.

Hardball is like airsoft but hardcore. I mean, muzzle velocities of 200 m/sec and steel bullets. And then you have to go to the doc and be all like "Oh, I accidentally shot myself in the ass three times, you know how it happens...", because they tend to report such injuries to the cops, who are not inclined to diddle around with your thugged-out ass.
Weak american capitalists inject themselves with heroin for fun. Here, the drug of choice is lead.

To be fair, it's a rather fringe sport, but still. Makes for great my-country-is-insane stories.

That it does. The guns you describe are more dangerous than blackpowder muskets, which are (well were) actual war weapons. And you use those for fun?!

We have... eh... effective protections. Unlike they had from muskets. So yes, in Russia we use it for fun.

Note to self: never ever ever challenge a Russian to paintball.

I've only played lasertag, though I would be interested in paintball. The lasertag game was cool but I sort of ruined it by imitating all the military games I've played and yelling out "Tango down! Charlie Alpha! Bravo Zebra!".

Having played both, the gulf between lasertag and paintball is pretty big. For one, paint doesn't always fly straight (especially if you end up using cheap rental markers), and two, lasertag doesn't hurt when you get hit. Paintball.. well, you've got quotes from the other guys here as to the pain :P
