Some questions about weapons
« on: March 06, 2014, 03:42:35 am »

1. What's the different between hammer and mace? In vanilla DF it's almost the same except using different skills. What about in MDF?

2. I've noticed that javelin thrower has 10 times force of crossbow. Does that mean it's times more deadly than crossbow? Why? And What's the weak point of javelin thrower?

3. How to make hunters use javelin thrower?

1) pretty much the same, yes

2) javelin thrower is much better then crossbow, no weak point

3) they use them instead of crossbows, if there are no crossbows, they could use -> so you have to to do nothing

Javelin thrower is 2-handed and the crossbow is 1 handed. That means it's harder for dwarves to use a shield (useful for protection against other range enemies). Also the ammo stacks are smaller, making it more expensive to train.

Combined with special ammo - broadhead, blunt, piercing - it's pretty powerful, especially in trained hands.

But aren't both using 'crossbowman' skill? why not train them with bolts?

What's the best way of archery training in MDF? Chain a wild animal and shoot it?

You might be able to learn up to level 5 in a library once you've got that set up. Not sure if that works for combat skills. Just stationing them on top of a fortified tower and having them snipe random wildlife and invaders works pretty well. Or find a bronze colossus or something hard to kill and trap it where you archers can ineffectually pummel it. Those are the best ways.

Yes I've done a few times where I train with crossbows and then switch to Javs for the squad once the majority have enough skill to then go on hunting patrols.
