Anyone who likes the look of this, I'm running it properly over on giant in the playground
Uninitiated! You are a denizen of a fantasy world, who has just come to realize they are now a god in many. You are a planeswalker, able to travel between dimensions. You are a planeswalker,
just able to travel between dimensions. The nice bit, the snazzy sunday and the reveling resound is that you can take parts of the worlds with you. Worlds have a bad habit of doing the same, long before you meet your peers.
A draft is a collection of random cards, usually from the same "set", a thematically and mechanically linked edition, issued to a group of players who must then build a 40-card deck, each taking one pick from a selection of about 15.
Don't worry your text-shy little head, however, you do not need to worry about the playing of the game for quite some time.
Why I'm doing this
I am pretty shit at magic, and the inaccessibility to noobs is a unforgivable sin, but! the draw of Magic the Gathering to me was always that the sheer amount of cards and their accumulated story mean decks can pretty much do their own thing, without running into demoralizing clones, hypothetically speaking. If any of you ever watched one of many and varied commercially focused card-game based kids shows, Yugioh being the go-to, the set up was always never before seen and character-focused cards appearing to amuse us, and on and off play of magic for a few years regularly saw me play wholly unfamiliar cards, many old, some new. Magic has a decent setup for a card game, too, and one i wanted to do more with.
So. I intend to run a draft, drawing from random cards throughout all of magic's sets, and set it up so that you're going to have to earn every card you strive for. If this picks up steam, later on in the draft those without a clue about playing magic who nevertheless don't want their Pyrrhic victories to go unsung can start picking up the strategy in the game, but that can come later. I expect veterans to announce themselves, and i will be making life particularly difficult for them so there aren't unfair edges. As for what happens when you all have your decks (depending on how many people signup and how many people feel like helping me -see below-, i may kill off the unwary and foolish), I'll see what you think later on.
I am inclined to assign each player a random 1-mana (weak as it gets) card, maybe thematically appropriate ones for veterans who know too much, but if you have a good fairly weak character concept for a fantasy world go for it. I intend to do one post a day, though it will vary.
Colour themes in the game
Since people seem to want to pick one for their character, here are the 5 colours of the game. Each one is linked to a land type, used to fuel spells and summonings.
Red is the colour of mountains, fire, blood and independence. Blue is the ocean and the mind. Green is the forest, life and strength. Black is the swamp, death, undeath and ambition. White is plains, community and law. Colourless is used with artifacts and the mana cost (spell fuel) of many cards, as it can be played with any colour. None are good or evil. You can find combinations of any of the above.

You witnessed a territorial duel, and you have narrowed down the location of the victors lair to one of two peaks. You dream of someday looking upon a clutch of dappled eggs, watch them hatch- you stop yourself before descending into a delirious vision of the broodmother's earsplitting lessons to her hatchlings. You have run low on supplies- while you have dressed appropriately for the occasion, anything resembling a meal would be a rare fool to venture to these vicious slopes. At the base of the mountain lies a forest, a bastion of elves and men somewhere in the distant trees. Safer perhaps is the castle to the south, widely stood on the isle off the coast, the occasional expedition hastily ferrying too and from the mainland. You have heard of your clansmen traveling to Castle Sengir, and the law there is not that of your tribe. Nevertheless, those who remember you and your experiments could number amongst those settled there, and your law is not kind.

Your caravan is camped outside the outpost walls, nestled in one of the many small valleys of the Cela Hills. You are returning from a long day of trade and pleasure, finishing the day with grateful payment from a druid who you escorted to Muzga's pastures. All around are ruddy with booze and more then a little raucous as they happily bumble towards the gates. A distinctly sober guard awaits, and after some insults are exchanged the gates steadily creak open- you hear the familiar and heavily slurred voice of the druid calling out. "Friiiiiends! Perhaps you, yes, you are indeed most fittang fer me next task. Feck it, do you want to see this or-" the gates shudders to a halt. As they swing back, the sounds of cracking blades and something crashing reverberate as local men rush to the sides of the thick wooden portal, desperately trying to lower the oak bar even as the gates stand ajar. One man ignores the barricades completely and rushes through with a determined look. The druid is beating a retreat, the scowling guard prepares to defend the heaving men and a lone horn calls out from the watchtower, barely audible over the bedlam. An passing Aven beats into the air for a better view, his companion seated and intoning rhythmic cantillations to the gods. Your sudden pallor belies the dread and more important the sobriety within you, but your companions stand swaying and open mouthed in shock.

Some are trying to close the gate with a guard watching their back, one idiots running outside and the alarm's being sounded with some difficulty over the godawful din. A couple of clerics are getting up to something. One is kneeling for some reason and the other, an aven (a bird-man), is flying into the air.

Rolling plains sweep out before you, a river with a singular tree coursing through. A griffon shifts uncomfortably on it's arch, wings near aflutter, some bauble clutched in it's foreclaws. It seems perturbed by a fellow drake, which after some study inexplicably vanishes from sight to reappear somewhere else entirely. A rabbit gazes up at you, presumably in appropriate terror. Along the river bank you can spy a gleam, and to the east a merfolk reclines obliviously under the shade of a tree.
What do you do?

You're being shaken awake. A bag of mostly powdered seeds, chisels and Somf skin thudding into your belly welcomes you to another night in the less prestigious scrapyards of Tomeba, the land of the ever-ready, the glimmering and steaming caskets. Your tokens scatter on the counter of a loxoden smith, granting you a scant three hours. His puffy trunk dismissively waves you through. A disapproving moon is overawed by the busy rattle of the furnace and the smoke of hundreds shearing into their ancestors leavings.
A smack, some squawking and rough feathers herald the disappearance of a Eglep bracelet you've been prettying up for the damn smith. Many sharp things follow the bird, men across the camp swearing viciously as their peers mumble sympathetically and inactively. This is the second time for you alone this month, your unimpressive silhouette perhaps having something to do with it. The night wasted, you can see other cairn hounds filtering out to the beaches, the groves and the healer. You recognize a chirp from above.

Snatching up a rock, you aim carefully and let fly. Astoundingly you wing the bird to popular applause, who flaps off erratically, unsteadily coming ever closer to the ground. Now at tree height- now within them. Hell you could even track it. Some seem to be considering doing just that, though from hunger or vengeance is unclear.

The elvish ranger nods to you, hopping into position as an extra ray of light appears in the leaves. A ogre glances at you sideways and then her with a hungry look, but it will wait. This is a poor day for interlopers. Moving along a stout branch, you can almost make out the trio you've been tracking. One with huge footsteps, a man and a goblin. The hysterical chuckles of that goblin are cut short by a tremor which you suddenly realize was a voice, followed by frenzied thumps.
Someway behind you on the trail wafts a lilting voice, all else silent. The beam in the trees wavers and fades as the archer behind it pads away and then heedlessly charges toward the call, birds boiling out of the trees and branches snapping. The goblin roars squeakily.
