+1 Do not let this spirit enchant you with it's whispered direction!

Also, why do we have a sword?

I give this thread one day to die.

I'll give such pessimism one glance and move on.

Yep, interesting premise. :P

Try to understand what the sword was saying--was it coherent or understood by the hearer?

Determine what kind of sword this is. Are we talking straight, or curved? Long, short, twice the size of the person wielding it?

Determine what the hell the setting is, where we are and who we are and such.

Her sword was ... simple, to say the least. It wasn't especially a good nor pretty one. It had many chips on the edges, and the color was a particularly drab grey. It was only slightly longer than her forearm. It was currently embedded into a man's body, limp and lifeless. Her own right hand was on the grip. A rivulet of blood streamed down the blade and dripped into the grass.

With a gasp, she let go of the sword—or tried to, but it felt like her hand was stuck to the grip. With a stronger tug, accompanied by the physical pain one might feel when skin was ripped, she fell onto the ground backwards. Her right arm throbbed painfully with every heart beat, but she did not notice. The sword almost seemed like a demonic being, now, its innocent, bloody grip mocking her. But it lie silent. Did she hear wrong?

With trembling fingers, her left hand found her iron amulet hanging from her belt. She yanked it off its crude hook and turned it three times in her hand, staring at the sword. The act was said to ward evil spirits that brought death or misfortune, but she harbored doubt as to whether iron would work on iron. If only she had a fire-mountain to toss it into, then perhaps it would have been better.

After a moment, she turned away from the sword, and looked around her. The foggy plain was littered with more bodies. All around her, lying on the floor, or headless, or draped over a bush, or, or ...

If that sword had a favorite food, perhaps it would have been flesh.

Ah, murder! So this is a mystery story then, a whodunit?

We should obviously puff our pipe and assess our list of suspects so far.

Also examine our hand, that whole tearing thing sounded painful.

Damn you all.

This, and remember what we were doing here to begin with. Sounds like an unpleasant neighborhood.

Pick the sword back up and ask what it is to see if it'll reply.
