Speaking of far future, we could make some chronology.
Say we separate the history in Ages lasting 3800 tides. We can have this:

-First Age: ???-First Cracks (0), the Age of Innocence. Civilisations arise, first the mould, then the elves and the dwarves, and the magma squids last. Mould discover music and teach the first elven and dwarven Skalds. Other "founding" stuff.

-Second age: 0-3800, the Age of Stability: Relatively happy age, or at least less grimdark that the next.

-3800: the Second Cracks. A piece of the Obsidian Spire fall and is looted by the Half Dwarf Pirate. The world at large realizes that the OS will fall at some point.

-Third Age: 3800-7600, the Age of Despair: Age during which most of the thread is set. Grimdarkness, strong belief that the world will end sooner or later dur to the Obsidian Spire falling apart, yada yada.

-Then: ???

This is not set in stone yet, as this is some major stuff we need to discuss.

I was thinking more like:

Broader Eras:
-Mythic past: some events survive as legends but timeline is not clear. Not even the Mould collective remembers this period very well, as some event damaged its memory. They blame the trees for this. Consequently, no one is sure how many times the spire has cracked.
-Oral History: Tradition of skalding begins, establishing an oral histroy that records a period spanning three cracks, though the tradition began before the first crack it records. The Elven King probably born sometime during this.
-Written Histroy: Historians begin assembling a written record from a combination of the oral one, the engravings of the Dwarves, and the loosely-written chronicles of Maggotmen travelers. The written record is far from perfect, however.

Basically, recorded histroy (whether oral or written) accounts for about 4 cracks, but before then nobody is sure.

The magma squids seem like the oldest, since the jellies split off from them. But seeing as they're confined to volcanoes, I'd imagine they're fairly insular and unconcerned with the outside world.

I can just see the world as it begins to fall apart... Everyone panicking as the deep ones rise from the ash sea and the spire cracking and pieces of it breaking off, and a great navel battle taking place as the souls of the damned begin to stir and add to the chaos. This world seemed doomed at the start, and yet they live. I'm also pretty sure these dwarves and elves would put the dwarfiest dwarf and the elfiest elf to shame. Know what this proves this world won't die off quickly?

No psychopathic race is trying to force the spire to fall.

((So I sort of did a rough draft for a short story in this setting.  I'm not sure it's that great, and it hasn't really gone anywhere yet, but it follows an elf named Altheras, and I was wondering if I should post it or not.  So far all he's done is been a moron and nearly gotten himself killed thrice.  Anyone interested, or should I just go ahead and scrap it?))

((Feel free to yell at me about grammar or inconsistencies so I can fix them.  I'll probably end up revising a bit of this anyway.  I had him placed in a small village on one of the outer islands, where it would be secluded and slightly more primitive than modern elven society, where he would have originally lived before this.))

(Interesting, though perhaps you don't need so much exposition, unless this is part of a larger story, in which case it might be best to space it out a little more.)

(I think we should move somewhat away from Grimdarkness. For example, the Dead in the sea probably aren't nearly that lethal. The only indication we have is that those cooped up with the dead for extended periods of time wind up either going insane or becoming bonded with them, and it really hurts people's ability to travel if they have to wear earmuffs at all times.

If people needed orichalcum amulets (enchanted so the souls within don't escape) in order to breathe at the surface, then pretty much everyone would have to live in sealed homes underground, Dwarf or not. How about having people carry around leaves from the trees instead? They'd be a lot more available, though of course people would have to replace them every so often.)

((It was going to be part of something slightly larger, mainly anything I can throw time into while I'm not busy at work, and I've been wanting to actually be creative for once. :P

The dead in the sea weren't exactly lethal, or so I was imagining, it was more of the fact that they had a siren effect, and would take them deep within the sea, probably never to surface again (getting lost, or drowning in an actual pocket of water). 

The amulet was going to be explained as a sort of one-of-a-kind thing that was given to him by the elder of the town, so as to actually do his job (mainly keeping him away from the village).  Or it would've been an heirloom from his dead mother, whose soul actually is stuck within the sea.  It wasn't a very large piece of Orichalcum one way or another, basically the size of a studded earring that had been worked by the enchanter while he lived at the larger town.  As such, it's got a very small purifying effect, basically limited to his skin.

The village was just coming up, along with some more Mould stuffs, but I had to leave work that day.  I might throw some more time into this later depending on how work goes tomorrow.  Thanks for the constructive criticism though, much appreciated.))
