I like the animals that they bring me, but I dislike the race (only in df though, not in other games). Once I have a few breeding pairs of cool war animals, BURN THE HERETICS!

I remember enduring a never ending war with the elfkin, they had sacked the mountainhome, the war had raged for over a hundred years. Spears and crossbows, spears and crossbows. I recall the death of the baroness's husband at the maw of a giant capybara. Mass conscription, yearly battles, siege after siege, death after death, no migrants, no peace. The elfkin drew the humans to attack us... not to mention the goblos and the undead.

That fort had endured crisis after crisis, then we breached the depths. Death wandered the caverns for years, until a mass of dorfkin cleared the the way. Many were blinded and could no longer serve in the unyielding conflict aboveground. Alas, the city could not sustain itself. Too much wealth and no one to defend it. We gathered what we could and fled north before the dawn of the next spring.

At one time I had not loathed the elfkin, at one time I had pitied them....

elves are worth more to me as friends then enemies. they bring wood and exotic animals with them to trade, which i greatly appreciate. their spoils of war are completely crap. seriously? what can a dwarf do with inferior wood armour? I'd rather fight goblins, who reward me with precious goblinite. at least until we can burn wooden items into charcoal.

I hate queueing up a hundred or so pieces of worn clothing then getting that '...a precious tree?' thing because one piece of goblin underwear has a wood decoration on it or something.  The exotic animals are cool, but I'd just as soon bathe them in magma.

...This thread... :'(

I remember when Elf hate was rampant. Its one thing to be indifferent, or to not mind them, but to actually like elves...
May your beards be shaved and your booze be weak. Suffer the daylight, suffer the sunshine.

I personally don't hate them. I don't like them at all though. I'll do some trading, but if they get sad I'd just as soon drop them in a pit with zombies. I like burning the forest, and theres nothing those pathetic wooden-armored elves can do to stop me. You want to seige me? Say hello to the magma. Sure the spoils of war aren't worth it, they're elves after all, but the war is worth more than some exotic creatures.

Elves are a significant threat in my worlds - I like my worlds savage, and I've got giant animals all modded [TRAINABLE] and [PET_EXOTIC], with a number of them upped to [LARGE_PREDATOR] if their base animal was too small to qualify (e.g. weasels - you know a giant weasel would be terrifying). So elves absolutely dominate in worldgen, and I usually have the option to start my game at war with the elves.

And if you start at war with elves, you stay at war with elves. I've never seen them try to make peace if our conflict started in worldgen.

If I enable elven diplomats I invariably end up at war with them, since there are only so many short jokes I'm willing to accept.
How many years does it take? I'm trying to trigger a war with the elves so I can get proper elite soldiers with MW bows*, but they keep coming to trade with me.

*I'm using the Broken Arrow mod, but only applied to crossbows.

Modest mod fixes the missing diplomats, as for angering the elves cutting the forest is not enough, you have to kill every plant even the grass, magma or dragons are good for that

With the diplomats enabled, simply killing one diplomat and one caravan caused an ambush (though that was immediately followed by another diplomat asking for peace). Without diplomats you really have to work for it :)
You can also used the dfhack command fixdiplomats to enable them.

Hmm. Maybe I should stop using the elven caravan as a dustbin? I killed the diplomat one time, but I was hoping that breaking tree-cutting promises would be enough.

I like the Elves.  They bring me wood.  I burn it.  They bring me seeds.  I plant them.  They bring me booze.  I drink it.  They bring me animals.  I breed them.  They even agreed to allow me to cut down some of the trees.

One day, when I have the King in my Fortress, I will lift the bridges and allow them to mill around outside.  Maybe shoot bolts at them.  But until then they are my Friends.

The Elves Are Our Allies.  The Elves Have Always Been Our Allies.  The Goblins Are Our Enemies.  The Goblins Have Always Been Our Enemies.*

* Well, not according to our Legends but never mind that.

If you enable the elves to wield metal, they become pretty awesome.
But vanilla, they're tree-hugging assholes who deserve to be sacrificed in the Dining Hall. Or thrown down a pit that leads to magma. Or tied to chains for the entertainment of your dwarf populace.

I had an outdoor zoo full of captive enemies. I would strip them naked and chain them up.

And there was another time when I dug a pit that lead to magma. Designated area as pit. Threw prisoners down pit to their fiery deaths.

Tree hugging hypocrites. Because you refused to buy my wooden trinkets, my people starved one winter and died. Screw you.

I don't like elves. The short jokes, the hypocrisy, the cannibalism...
But they bring cool stuff. Fancy wines and giant war tigers are cool. I tolerate them as trading partners.

I admit, the whole "burn the treehugging hippies in magma and carp" seems a forced. But it's so satisfying! I take great pleasure in watching my marksdwarves wiping out a caravan when they decide the wooden bin full of diamonds and gold is too insulting.
