A closer look revealed that those crystals had creatures imprisoned inside them, while the purpose behind that probably will remain a mystery there's a bag of gold near the crystals, which probably belonged to one of the victims.
Obtained 4000 Gold!

4-6; attack DL1 so hard!

Aura bounded forward with leaps of energy, and released much of her spellforce into the nearest foe. She felt quite energetic and unbeatable...until she counted how many were present after the green muck running beside her, and over on the heights off in the distance; her spellbook was not durable enough to wreathe with that much spellpower to take them all on, as evidenced by the other spellbooks which had taken collateral damage from channeling her spells.

"Seraphim, Anne, anyone? What happens when people are without any weapons on a battlefield like our conundrum? I can't seem to find or pick up any, around here that helps me."

Both Kat and Gordon weren't able to find anything aside from more corpses imprisoned inside crystals.
