How many people can the hydroponics systems feed? How did we get here if we're at full fuel?

I'm not sure we know enough about our destination to begin production, but it's hard to go wrong with drones for refueling from the atmosphere of a planet we're orbiting. Maybe 2.5 metal for refueling drones and 2 for mining equipment, keeping 5 in reserve.

Preliminary vote for Sj-21A, barring signs of a space-faring civilization. I don't want to be constrained to a system with only a single planet, and if the ocean world is inhabitable, we can probably go back to place our main colony there after starting operations in Sj-21A.

I say we wait for the drones and our final descision before starting to manufacture equipment, unless there's some silly thing like power requirements preventing us from using the factory while at warp.

And I second the vote for atmospherical harvesting operations and (vacuum proved) mining equipment. Ideally, I want to start mining an asteroid first, before developing a new ship rather than crashlanding ours.

Well, yeah, the warp drives require a good amount of the ship's power, so the factory section can't be used while in warp; we'd have to wait until orbit if we don't do anything now.

Anyways, Fuel harvesting drones and mining equipment it is. The factory section is able to churn out 3 drones and several heavy mining pieces before the scout drones return.

Sj-21A Has a mercury-type planet very close to the sun, followed by an airless planet pockmarked with impacts from the inner belt. Not much farther from the orbit of that planet, though, is a planet confirmed to have an oxygen atmosphere! Details of the scan show it is an arid world with only one ocean and little water otherwise(though there is an area with a spectacular lake and river flowing to the ocean that seems promising for a colony). The scans only detect sparse vegetation, but this world seems to have higher mineral concentrations than normal...

There is also a rocky moon of the gas giant that seems to have a technically breathable atmosphere, but only trace water and very strange weather patterns...

GH-912 scan confirms the world has water oceans,as well as an oxygen atmosphere. Mineral composition appears to be normal, but more detailed ground surveys are needed....

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Let's get into orbit of Sj-21A then.

Thirded.

I vote heading straight for the arid oxygen world, unless we spot something that the probe missed, and performing more detailed scans before deciding on our colony site.

If the probes are re-usable, send one to the other nearby star while we travel.

This CAN be done(at the cost of 2 units of fuel to refuel both probes), but they have some rather simple telemetry and can only be programmed to return to the destination they were launched from, so this will have to wait until the ship reaches its destination.

Anyways, the council debates these two targets, but the agreement is clear: Sj-21A has the best amount of resources and a potentially good planet to restart our civilization from. With the reactor repairs finished and all manufacturing completed, the factory is offlined, power is redirected, and the ship's massive alcubierre drive is engaged, with course set for the star that hoped to be soon called home.

All doesn't go well, however. Halfway through the jump, a power conduit on section 3-FC on deck 4 blows, causing a power blank to the cryo systems! Emergency power routing saves most of the colonists, but 500,000 are lost before they can set their sites on their new home. With a heavy heart, the captain brings the ship out of warp into the system, tragedy already dogging the mission.(the dice gods don't seem to like you guys)

Scans of the system don't indicate anything different than what the probe showed, but for one thing: The 4th planet in the system has a Nitrogen-Methane atmosphere similar to that of Titan, making fuel refining ops there vastly more profitable and simpler! this could come in handy for the future, and provides a ready place to refuel from should we decide to use the fuel drones and go somewhere else. Which brings up the most important question: Do we make our home here, or try our luck elsewhere?

Fuel[5/30]

Can we get the system layout please?

Spoiler: Something like this (click to show/hide)

How much fuel would it take to launch our ship from the surface of the oxygen planet, or is our ship a one-landing-only type?

If we can't re-launch, we need to spend time in an asteroid belt before landing, to get some basic automated space infrastructure up. It would be much easier to establish something while we still have a space-side factory, even if our lowest-contract ship is falling apart on us.

I more or less agree with Nirur Torir.

Do we have the equipment needed to establish a water treatment/desalinization plant? If we're to set up shop on such a dry planet we had best do it with access to water.

Do we have surface-ship shuttles?  If so I suggest we put down about 800-900 units of population and keep the rest shipboard for the time being, using the asteroid belt to build up some sublight ships for in system use and maybe a space habitat or two and a shipyard.

If we have no shuttles then I suggest we move to the asteroids and start in on a shipyard and shuttles right away so we can keep out interplanetary and interstellar power. We can't (easily) get those back and we shouldn't put all our eggs in one basket.

ummm, I'm not sure if I've conveyed just how fucking LARGE the colony ship is. if it tried to enter the atmosphere, even setting down in the ocean would risk it collapsing under its own weight(think about it; it carries enough space for crew, an entire factory module able to produce heavy mining equipment and fuel drones, and space for 1.5 million prople, even when they're being cryo-stored!). So yeah, it has ship-to-surface shuttles designed to ferry stuff around.

Desalinization plants can be rigged up with the backup life-support systems no problem, the only materials needed are for the buildings they'd be housed in, which could be modified from the standard colony habitats loaded on the ship.

As for a shipyard, the factory section on the front of the ship is designed to be detached and act as an orbital manufacturing base, which cuts down drastically for the need for surface workshops to get the colony started. Though, you'll need to have it produce proper support structures to build actual ships and not simple drones, which will basically require the rest of the bulk metal on hand...

And as for a map, I'll whip up something next update, right now I'm gonna call it a night

Begin ferrying down supplies and manufacturies down to the planet. Setup biodomes, and everything else needed. Build fuel storage silos, and begin harvesting fuel from the planet.
