Well, depends. In my experience a slashfic is one centering around the romance or sex between two people of the same gender. Can be explicit or not.

Quite true. But the term has a slightly more specific origin in that it comes from the genre of Kirk/Spock pairing fan fiction, where the same sex connotation comes from.

I think if it's not same sex, it's just a ship fic. Slash fiction, though, is understood to be more out-there than a regular ship fic.

I did consider it as the origin, but I also think it might've been one of those cases where an aspect overtakes the whole: the same-gender fics became the ones known by that name either due to their prevalence, greater projection or because they're the "original" ones.

I actually really like this... *ahem*, Piecewise method of sprite design. Appropriately creepy for the setting, I say.
