Chaps are sometimes referred to as "assless" when worn for no purpose beyond being a fetish. So in that sense, "chaps" might be expected to look worse and protect the legs better than "assless chaps," despite both being quite assless and quite chapslike.

Edit: Ah, I see- chaps aren't actually pants at all, they're protective coverings that strap onto legs. Worn over pants unless you're some sort of deviant, obviously. The more you know! Also my brain-knowledge was right about something I am so happy. *squee*
