Dear Grate,

Remember that weird pill machine you had some time ago? Well, I gave that thing to Simus. After talking it over, we decided it'd be best this way. You may not remember, but last time you used it... very bad things happened. So we decided she should keep an eye on it. She said you might still be allowed to use it, but you'll have to talk to her to find out the details.

To make it up to you, I give you this Gilgamesh doll. I made it nice 'n sturdy, so you should be able to play with it without it breaking apart. I hope you'll have as many awesome adventures with him as I did with the real one.

Tinker idea: tall platform heels shaped like an inverted 'U', with mono-atomic wire running between the bottoms of the aperture.
That way you could look stylish, be taller and bisect your foes at the waist by kicking them!

He doesn't want to be treated like a kid. Instead of getting a tool, he got a toy. See why he's mad?

One of the more interesting aspects of the time discontinuity that will be arising is that Grate will finally grow up.

He's already most of the way there. The question is, what will it take for people to stop treating him like a kid?

Well...two things to consider.
One, you guys implied that it would be something neat, or at least something I didn't already know existed.
Two, you gave Grate a toy because no one's letting him use his Nyars device.

It's really agency. Familiar with the term? Grate is, though he's never actually seen it. It basically means that you matter in the story.

Reread Grate's soliloquy. He was chosen to be part of the team at Hephaestus; some amount of respect is implied with that.
Grate's mostly annoyed because everyone's treating him like a kid. He doesn't want to be a kid--he wants to be a functioning ARM member.

Yes, but they probably can't talk to and ask the tool to become other things. Its like when people yell at a machine for doing something wrong (even though a machine can only do what it is made to do), except this time the machine can actually yell back. Or eat them, albeit that may discourage the yelling.
