Fishing Issue (AWARE OF BUG)
« on: January 17, 2014, 12:21:39 am »

I know all about the bug that makes it so that ponds can run out of fish in it, but I have DFhack open and I have thousands of fish on the map (aboveground fish, I think). However, all of my fishers think that the map is actually devoid of all fish.

Does anyone have theories?

He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

How do you find out about the number of fish?

Anyways, there is a bug that makes the fisherdwarves think that there are no fishable vermin at all, I think. I've run into that problem before.

DFhack has a command called region-pops list-all, which returns every population on your map.

However, after some research and testing, I found that this relays the populations POSSIBLE on the map. Since the waters on my map are all murky pools, there is no chance for any kind of fish to enter or exit the map, unlike other populations of large creatures or vermin.

I noticed a major decline of the brown recluse spider on my map, so I start to use DFhack to bump population numbers by a factor of a thousand. Within two seasons, I now have a large viable source of web coming in as the spiders start to remigrate to my map. Since vermin have lifespans, once a year I will have to recheck the count of spiders and make sure more will migrate in next year.

Maybe it's only your preferred zone fishing settings?

What type of fish are they? If they aren't the sort of fish you could normally catch from a murky pool, it's possible DF is including the population of a nearby river or lake, where the only way to catch them is to fish from an actual river tile (within the map feature) or lake tile (within a separate biome).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I do not use preferred zone fishing. I let them run around and fish as they please.

(Edited for specific information addressed as follows)

Upon remaking the world, I found that I have embarked near a rather large river. The fish that DFhack is finding are several types of trout, char, and a lot of other standard fish types (including carp). I believe that the fish I am seeing are probably populations that could potentially migrate to the map. Given that they live in the river, they have no ability to do so.

However! My spider populations have spiked significantly, coming through specific biomes and leaving behind their tell-tale webs. I have a really good grasp on how the "region-pops boost" works for DFhack. For extra science points, I am going to embark on a river and try to fish it with factor 1000 fish to see the results.
