We should try to turtle in the base. Although orcs love a fair fight, mastodons are way tougher than them. Elephants kill orcs in a few hits, and mastodons basically curbstomp elephants. The mastodons will wander away after a while.

Spring has come, although the river hasn't thawed yet.
I don't think it will thaw ever, MW seem to have a bug where water never thaws, at least for me in all the embarks I've made (I usually play in Gaia world) in temperate biomes if it starts frozen it never thawes and if it starts liquid it never freezes...

There is no bug with water temp. I couldnt even make one if I wanted to. Embark further in the center of the map, it tells you the temperature pre-embark as well. It only never thaws if you play with Temp:Off.

I'm hoping to have the next instalment up in the next 24 hours, but in the meantime:

* LonelyZeus - You're on the list.
* Everyone - The river *does* thaw in summer. Just not for very long. We're going to need to be ready to go immediately with the raids next year when it does.
* someone12345 - The mastodons wandered off without trouble. However as everyone trains above ground, critters that do come too close become fair game. :)
* mahgell - We need to get arrows online pronto. Then I'm definitely looking forward to you shooting things. :)
* someone12345 - The mastodons aren't zombies, they were just very lean.

If I've missed a question from you, let me know. :)

Ad me as an orc too please!

They decided to leave my fortress via the circus because the front door was locked to keep Goblins out.  THAT should be an interesting trip back to the Mountainhome.

So, I had meant to post an update today, but I ended up releasing Orc Fortress Rebalanced instead. You should go play (and let me know if you do a Let's Play).  However to keep you entertained, we have a family tree! Everyone who is not in the initial seven is related; we most certainly have a clan here. Names in parentheses are not at the fort. And yes, Gief and Talthra have two children, both named Uzgash (but different genders). Also amusingly is that Talthra's parents are named Buur, and Tugbuur.

I've been playing with temp:on, I usually get a site on the lower left corner close to the centre where temperatures are reported as "temperate" and I can get a site with both evil and good biomes plus savage and temperate, in vanilla choosing a temperate whatever gives an embark with thawing water, but so far I've had no luck in MW...  ???

25th Timber, 101, Late Autumn

"UngodlyPetal, my sweet, we have been searching the wildernesss for a long time to find a place we can call home. What do you think of this place?" asked LonelyZeus.

"I like it, WebbedStolen dearest," said Hostergaard, sipping on a small bottle of disease resistant draught that she kept in a flask in case of contact with dwarves. "And we have family! What a delight it was to find Jaxy LyingBolts and Talthra Wraithlikepainted out here."

"Yes, they do seem to be making a name for themselves. I wonder how Talthra's children are doing back home? Little TortureSold and GreaterCursed. Such lovely names."

"We might be able to ask after them; it seems to be the season for traders, and goodness knows everyone must have seen that smoke plume, just as we did. I expect we'll have half the continent here before long."

"Might have some elves turn up. Been a while since we've had a bit of bloodshed."

"Oh, that would be nice. My pop—TormentedDip—why he would have such great stories about hunting elves."

"Oh yes, I remember those! Talking of traders, here are some now.  It looks like they're from that same hill orc tribe that died in the fire last month."

"Yes, and Tarrlox and SageEthereal have gone out to the depot to meet them. They're going to make such a sweet couple one day.  I wonder if the hill orcs are unhappy about the senseless death of their kinsfolk?  You don't think they'd do anything vengeful, would they...? What's that smell?"

26th Timber, 101, Late Autumn

Despite us being far from our homes in this frozen waste, it appears that not only are we crawling in traders, but they are unable to unpack their goods without setting something on fire. Imagine my surprise when I made a show of SageEthereal and myself being at the depot to greet them, only to find ourselves surrounded by flames. At first I thought the hill orcs were retaliating due to the senseless loss of their kinsfolk in the trade fire a month before, but it appears that they obtained a barrel of dragonfire—no doubt from the warlocks—and were eager to show us their wares.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Luckily, we had re-built the depot entirely from stone after last season's incident, and since the land around is nothing but ash and snow, there was little else to catch fire. We are singed, surprised, but not harmed. It does appear that the blast melted the traders' entire stocks of cheese. When I asked if their caused them dismay, they pretended to not know what I was talking about and say that cheese that was dripping off their cart was not theirs. I do not understand our hill orc cousins, but when I pointed out that melted cheese is delicious, and they could purchase it in exchange for some of the old chests they were carrying, they readily agreed.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not far behind the hill orc traders are warlocks, and—thank goodness—some of our kinsfolk. I wish dearly that no mishaps will befall us while they are here, and decide that after this season we must move the trading depot across the river, and away from any flammable objects.

The trade negotiations proceed smoothly. We purchase wood, barrels, buckets, splints, and other mundane objects. We purchase a great deal of leather, as we are still in great need of armour, and our numbers are large enough that Tarkuul may take an apprentice. From the warlocks we purchase some of the exquisite animal masks that they specialise in, and from the hill orcs we purchase some animals, a few for slaughter, but there is a badgerdog and a huge mastiff that kamikaze believes can be trained. We trade mostly in melted cheese, and the hill-orc weapons and armour that survived the last great fire. Our kinsfolk bring us news of the outside world—apparently there are still a few bands of Taiga orcs left scattered amongst the wilds, and Yagratak is still Great Clanfather. They also reveal to us some of their greatest finds, a magnificent mithril axe, an ebony helm, a bloodsteel hauberk, and a small bag of finely ground mithril. We barter for some time over their worth, and agree that they are equal in trade to what remains of a fine set of Tarkuul's lamellar armour (now damaged by the fire), a collection of hill-orc weapons, a large gem the likes of which are rarely seen, six piles of dirt, and an enormous cart of gnarled roots which refuse to burn and look unsightly in our camp. It is a hard bargain for both of us, but the deal is struck.

As we finish the negotiations, I notice a commotion from the smelters in the eastern part of our camp. I wish the traders fair tidings, and shake my head as the hill orcs enquire from the warlocks about the possibility of purchasing more dragon-fire.

It appears that the excitement from the smelters is well deserved. No-one quite knows where it came from, and the vein of iron that we have been processing is long gone, but the metal is unmistakeable. To think that the stuff of legends still exists, and may still be buried somewhere beneath our feet...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I order the ingots to be taken to the vaults, and order our armoury efforts redoubled; I'm much too aware that the traders have observed the excitement by the smelter as well, and many a tongue has been loosened with the deliciousness of melted cheese...

In other news:

Tarkuul is making masterwork lamellar armour. This is our greatest asset, but also the most likely to attract attention of our foes (due to its great value).

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

GnarFengYur is proving herself in the military. While she doesn't have a great deal of experience, she makes up for it in enthusiasm.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And finally, the access-ways beneath The Circle look really pretty. Except for the central staircase, each of these leads to the private lower floor of one of our citizens.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As always, I love feedback, and if you wish to be orced, let me know. I have too many nameless orcs in the camp right now. :)

In case you really dont know where orichalcum came from: All ores have 1-2% of it. This means for every 50-100 bars of metal you create, you get one bar of orichalcum.

For a moment this confused me:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Why would I have processed copper ore *globs* in my ore processor? I spent an hour looking for a bug, because the iron ore produced boulders fine, but the malachite was in a form I couldn't process.

Eventually, I realised that everything had recently been on fire, and that copper has a lower melting point than iron. So the copper globs are puddles of copper in my workshop.

Unfortunately, I don't know any reactions which use metallic globs as input, but I'm pretty sure copper ore is still usable after being in a fire, so I'm going to be de-spawn these and spawn some boulders to replace them. Huzzah for DFHack! :)
