Practice mode is a great way to beat your head against a problem and get nowhere just as well. I think I spent an entire week messing with hover designs that I never could get to fly right (either due to dumb gimmickry on my part or just lack of CPU). And I spent most of my career learning how to hover upside down and backwards before learning that hover blades should be placed ABOVE your center of mass or they will constantly try to flip you. Regardless of your stance on the removal of lower-tier equipment, having the T2 hoverblade say 'BETTER THAN THE T1 HOVERBLADE LOL' is goddamn inexcusable.

(also I would love to be able to build a two-winged plane without driving myself to tears first)

I love the game despite its flaws, but there's just not enough feedback to design the more complicated bots without laborious trial and error over the loading screen. And the fact that you have to disassemble your first bot to use any of its cubes in a second and you may not even have a fallback to play the game with if you get frustrated with it. (I was pretty miffed when they started selling robots without adding the ability to make your own personal blueprints so you could save designs you liked. I suppose that defeats the point of having different garage slots but I'd prefer to be able to freely tweak and design without fear of being unable to play the game.)

- (caveat: Talking about T4 here mostly. I also use an SMG interceptor instead of a plasma bomber.)

I can't say I've tried it, but I never play my flier as the first line of offense/defense. This may come from the before-times when being visible for a split second meant a rail through the pilot seat, but I usually spend time gaining altitude while the rest of the team moves to engage. Then I either circle around and flank or go to the popular rail-sniper hangout to strafe them and disappear into whatever valley gives me cover. Altitude is useful because people seem to have a really difficult time hitting me when I nose dive. As long as I consciously avoid getting attention and perform evasive maneuvers (probably a lot easier with SMGs that can also fire while doing all this), I can usually come through a match with a kill or two and still be alive. Maybe not flying, but alive.

Two winged planes don't really work well, in Robocraft or in real life, because it doesn't let up fully control rotation.

So nobody uses lasers any more?

I still call them machine guns oddly enough

and frankly... No it isn't a good idea since they have the shortest range and can often not even hit airborn targets (or find it nearly impossible to) and are outclassed by Rail... and the range means that to hit someone with lasers you MUST enter their fire zone... You cannot sneak, get cover, or edge in and out of the fire range like the other weapons can.

Rail essentially does what Lasers wish they could do.

This is all without going into how the game's aiming system is INSANE! so expect to miss a lot with an attack that should be effortless to land blows with.

Once again I say this wouldn't be an issue if the game allowed multiple weapon types on one vehicle... But I am not making the game.

---

The second way to look at it is in terms of counters and what lasers are good for.

Lasers are good against slow moving wheeled vehicles... OR slow moving planes IF you are also a plane... and that is pretty much it.

No, SMGs are amazing at hitting air. I do better with them than with any of the other weapons, actually. Yes, you can do one-hit kill with other weapons, but then you have a long reload time that you can die in. SMGs don't have that restriction. Also, they are accurate enough to hit anything in range.

SMGs aren't terrible DarkStar, far from it.

They are just inferior to both the Mortar and Rail gun because this is a game about avoiding being hit... not about tanking hits.

Especially since if you die, you lose out on cash... and if you are using the SMG you are always in the death zone.

My preferred weapon is the SMG though...

I keep hearing this but I never seen it... I've always seen Aircraft hover just out of range and be unhittable while they rain down either SMG or Mortar or Rail with impunity. Often because to hit them you have to go into some terrible camera angle.

Did they change the air mechanics or something? Maybe a lower flight ceiling?

Do Tier 8+ Machine guns just have that much more of an impressive range?

I snipe air with SMGs all the time. You just have to do it in short, controlled burst so the crosshair stays small. In fact, I'll take an SMG over a Railgun any day for shooting down enemy satellites, since you can infinitely more shots with the SMG to actually hit the tiny things than you do with a Rail.

As far as I can tell, the first shot and maybe the second will land directly in the middle of your crosshair if you're stationary and burst fire at distant targets, it's how I play my little skirmisher bot all the time- pop out from cover burst fire at whatever I can see and run away, it's a little more interesting than bricks with wheels and mortars in neat little rows even if it isn't as effective.

they ment that machine guns are great at hitting air, as in not hitting anything at all :^]

You just need to remember they're hitscan-- don't lead the target. The laser FX have nothing to do with where the shots are going. So long as you aim directly at them & they're in-range, you'll start doing damage.

I thought everything had unlimited range now? I've hit things with lasers outside of draw distance because someone spotted them before.

I've heard mention SMGs are longer-ranged than rails.

Ugh, plasma cannons are dumb. They one shot you and there's no way to prevent them from closing and blowing you up, since cannon-users have a thousand armor or something while I plink away at them with my pew-pew ones.

the thing with SMGs is that the skill check with them is bursting correctly for the right range. But its a silly system, why do they fire in sequence, why not all at once, it makes using SMGs annoying and gamey.

They're rapid-firing weapons, what difference does them firing in sequence make?
And they fire in sequence to limit to possible fire rate of any vehicle.
