I'll write the dungeon crawlers into the next zone soonTM.
With the creature felled, and Gregory's silently smoldering form extinguished, you rush back to base, since you are unable to get your partner back on your own. Eventually, with the help of a few patrols, you manage to get him down by throwing him of the side of the mountain and casting Feather Fall. From there, he is loaded into a waiting cart and is whisked away to the Coalition's medical facilities. He should be up and about the day after tomorrow.
You wander back to the station, thinking about Puppeteers and psionics, words you've never heard outside of some of the most obscure sagas. You don't know how you know that what you fought this morning was a Puppeteer, or how it could manipulate the minds of others psionically, but you figure it's probably the guest on the back of your skull.
But that's something to deal with later. You've arrived at the station, and it's time to speak to the captain. You enter his office, and give him a full after-action report. He grows a frown when you tell him of how you felled the Puppeteer, and casts a disapproving look in your direction.
"I am not pleased that you chose to kill this... Puppeteer. It would have been best if you could have taken it alive, so we might try it alongside Elias. That said, under the circumstances, it was just barely allowable, since it could have been a greater danger alive and in the Pen. You said that one tried to control you? This is bad news. We'll have to sweep for them and their influence. Either way, it's good that we were able to discover this threat to the city early on. Thank you for your effort.
"This brings me to another thing: your employment by the Church Coalition. That badge you carry is, as of now, just a piece of metal. We are willing to offer you some authority behind it, backed by a paycheck.
"Sadly, because of the high profile of this case, I am unable to offer you full-time employment. It's against policy: You will need to testify, as you were deeply involved with the case, but if I were to give you a job right before or after the trial, people would be asking questions, and rightly so. The same goes for if you didn't testify and still got the job. However, my supperiors and I are willing to offer you work as a contractor.
"You would receive the same salary as entry level officer, with the potential for raises. However, you would have to provide your own room and board, and would be on call at all times. Hence, there is no overtime, but you are free to take on other jobs to supplement your income. Your title would be Civilian Specialist, and your primary task would be to assist in the elimination of criminal organizations.
We might ask you to infiltrate a gang or investigate a possible front. Things like that. How does that sound?"
Trewal pushes a contract across his desk.
