How can i properly to keep track of the fighting?
« on: December 23, 2013, 11:53:41 am »

I've recently started Dwarf Fortress and don't think the learning curve is too steep. However when there is a fight  I get confused about what is happening. Except for the blood, I can see that. I pause the game after a second of fighting and the reports tell me that my dwarf has just bit a kangaroo in the leg, chopped its arm off and punched it in the heart and it has died. Is there anything to help with the extreme speed that the fighters use? Also do animals recognize traps? Does anything recognize them?

I do that, but fights seem to progress so quickly that i don't notice much at the moment it happens

Press "s" followed by "." repeatedly to one-step.

Or lower the FPS cap in init.txt.

Press "s" followed by "." repeatedly to one-step.

Or lower the FPS cap in init.txt.

Or press alt - to slow the FPS down. Speed it back up with alt +.

But don't go below 10 fps or you will have problems.

Those are not "-" and "+", they are "-" and "=" to the left of your "Backspace" key.

Pressing "Alt"-"-" repeatedly will slow down your game speed, and "Alt"-"=" will increase it. It's really useful for EVERYTHING, not just combat. Do you want to quckly build a large building and skip time? Use Alt=. Do you want to look at arrows flying and hitting goblins in slow-mo? Press Alt- many many times.

P.S. There's also this utility which can show combat reports in a separate window so you don't have to press R repeatedly.
