So I just got distant universe not too long ago and I really like it. It's definitely a very 4x game and thus far I'm still learning. That said any other games like it?

There's obviously plenty of other space based 4x games, and they'll all share elements in common with Distant Worlds, but one of the game's main selling points is that there isn't really any others that do it in quite the same way / have the same sort of feel as DW does.

Stuff like the ship design, diplomacy, tech tree, combat etc are all present and similar in a lot of other games.  The main things that set DW apart are the automation elements, the fairly in depth resources system, and the private sector aspect, which all combine to create the feel of running an empire in a 'living universe' that you don't really get elsewhere.

I mean on paper Stardrive has a lot in common with DW, but in practice they're really quite different experiences.

So in short, kinda yes, kinda no (but mostly the latter where it counts).

here are many 4X games but i don't think any goes that ar with making things as complicated as they can.
Sure i could give you a list of 4x games but none of them do everything DW does.

Honorable mention goes to Sins of a Solrar Empire and its addons i giess and the Gal Civ series.

I'd still say the closest one is Stardrive, because of the economy thing. It's definitely streamlined down to 2 or 3 resources, but you still have to have the freighters hauling cargo around, so there's a more complex notion of economy than just adding all the income from all the planets into a general pool...

Looking for a very player-driven MMO, with player-run towns and limited grind, if any. Preferably free.

EVE is that. You can buy subscription with in-game money.

I'm thinking more fantasy, really. I tried EVE - but it never really enraptured me.

"The Guild" springs to mind, but I've never played nor seen gameplay of it. I believe it is a strategy game with a focus on trade.

Other than that, "Recettear". If you don't mind the cutesy style of the game, the dialogue is really well done as well as being quite challenging. You play as a shopkeeper who has to pay back a debt in parts at the end of every week.

I could say "Mount and Blade: Warband" but honestly since trading isn't the main focus of the game there's no reason to do trading unless amassing money is enough gameplay. Trading is more a means to the end of funding a warband rather than an end in and of itself.

Any "The Guild" game.
Any "Patrician" game.
Most games from the X series allow you to ship and make goods for a profit.
There is a very old RPG called "Spell of Gold" where you play as a traveling merchant in a fantasy world... altho i hear its kinda meh.
Trade Empires (a strategic game that takes place over the ages where your trading family starts with only donkeys and aquires new tech (limited by the scenario).
