No chaser ?
« on: December 18, 2013, 05:58:38 pm »

So I quit drinking a few years back.. but I have this wild turkey Rare breed barrel proof 108.2 proof whiskey that has been staring at me from across the table all day. I think it  even winked at me once. I have no chaser. coffee. water. and the only thing I've eaten all day was a bowl of oatmeal. So bad idea ? I could probly stomach it watering my shots down a little. Has been a long time since my "Lets drink this everclear straight from the bottle " days.

If you trust yourself to keep it a one time thing that's entirely up to you. You might want to save it to share on social occasions.

Why is it 108.2? Is it really that different from 101 proof Wild Turkey?

Did you quit drinking because you never wanted to drink again? If you start up again you might encounter whatever problems you faced before.

But if it was just a general "nah, don't wanna drink" thing, a couple shots isn't gonna kill anyone.

This is coming from someone who rarely ever drinks, and when I do it's a glass of white wine or 1 to 2 shots of hard liquor - but no more. So I'm a total lightweight.

It was pretty much a "I got better shit to do" decision. and its 108.2 proof because it is 54.1% alcohol. Don't ask me man. thats what the bottle says. LOL
I drink beer occasionally but never get drunk. I think I'll just have a couple shots to warm the blood and make merry or whatever. Just not a big liquor drinker anymore. Probly gonna go down rough is all. I hear the kids are smoking their booze nowadays.

Are there any bourbon snobs out there to tell me what nutty high tones i should check for ? I'm still sniffing my shot. The aroma vaguely nostalgic. Like throwing up in the nineties.

Personally I would save it for later. This is ringing the 'bad idea' alarms for me.

Mix it 50 50 with water like a normal person.

Or don't, if you have alcohol problems.

I would drink it with some friends. We have a saying here that anyone who pours his own shots is an alcoholic. Take that as you will.

I don't really like whiskey (too dry and leathery taste for me) so I can't comment on quality of that.

Why would you mix alcohol with water? That seems counterproductive for me.

If you're drinking to get drunk, buy a $3 gallon of vodka.

In my state the taxes on that $3 gallon of vodka would be like $30.

I think you would mix liquor with water to dilute it, same as mixing it with coke or juice or whatever. The Romans traditionally mixed their wine with water, because drinking undiluted wine would lead to madness.

My guess is they just found it irritating in polite company for certain people to get their drink on immediately and have that imbalance of inebriation whereby a person's annoyance level is based on the amount by which the guy next to him is drunker.

EDIT: Only thing I drink lately is this Fireball whiskey, only 50 proof but spicy and delicious. My girlfriend likes to mix it with hard cider. I just don't see the attraction. And diluting alcohol seems like a waste to me.

FAKEEDIT2: If you believe homeopathy you should drip a single drop of liquor into a gallon of water - that way you'll get drunk almost immediately!  ::)

What I've read on water+wine:
Back in olden times, drinking straight water would often lead to disease, so they got their liquid sustenance from wine. They thought the water would only cause issue by itself, not with wine, so they mixed them to make the wine go further - and also, of course, to get drunk less.

Well, the alcohol would act as an antibacterial agent, to some extent. The sugar, not so much.

From what I recall, people used to drink incredible volumes of very weak beer instead of water. I guess you'd be a tiny bit uplifted but not even buzzed.

The proof is exactly twice the alcohol concentration. So, hypothetical pure ethanol is 200 proof. Practically, the highest you can get is 192 proof.
