Knights and Merchants
« on: December 14, 2013, 12:41:39 am »

Knights and Merchants is this really old RTS game that, unlike many newer RTS's, is very slow paced, and features a very elaborate economy focus on how your base runs.

I played it a lot as a kid, and I recently re-purchased the Historical Version on Steam and have been playing it again.

Is there anyone else who still plays this/fondly remembers it?

Thanks for the link and picture!

And I see that your game is actually in the native language.

I had the base game on a CD... somewhere.

Mechanics wise the game was something between Settlers 2 (need roads between buildings) Settlers 3 (no BS limitation of 1 helper per road playing hot potato with your goods. If there are 3 stones to collect then 3 people will be on the job).

And suprisingly enough the combat reminds me of total war (cept the game came out before the series even started).

All in all a fun but HARD game.

This is the best Settlers-like I ever played.

I used to have that problem as a kid, don't remember what fixed it.

I actually have a problem with my computer right now, where if I play a game in full screen, all the colors are inverted.
I still play this game, though, because it's so fun, with the inverted colors.

Anyone know how to put the game in windowed mode?

Knights and Merchants was an amazing game. Definitely the best game of the Settlers kind... you could lose just because you didn't really build your town properly. That you needed to feed troops was also pretty cool!

Yes, there have been many times where I marched my army over to the other side of the map, only for them to say they're hungry, after they're too far away to run back to get fed.

Meh, tried to reinstall it, but apparently the installer doesn't work on 64 bit computers, even though the game does.

A lot of these old games' don't actually do anything in the registry, so you might be able to instal it on another machine and then just copy paste it.

Sadly, I don't have any non 64 bit computers lying around. I'm afraid I might have to look into alternate directions.

The game has FPS issues on some more modern systems. There's a patch for that, IIRC.

Yeah, they have a patch, it's included with the Historical Version that I've got, so mine can run smooth as silk.
The AI still gets a little slow once you have a big town and your serfs have to do a bunch of calculations, though.
