What's your favourite DF Let's Play?
« on: December 13, 2013, 08:18:47 am »

For me, it's CapnDuck's SnarlingUrn.  If not for that particular series, I'd have given up on DF after my first week of abject failures.

What are your faves?

You'll find epic fortresses such as Boatmurdered are the main draw. That's what got me interested in DF.

The Jefmajors one was what has hooked me into the world of DF.

Captain Duck's original series is what got me started. I can't compare it to any others, though, since I haven't watched them.

Surprisingly, I wasn't a big fan of Boatmurdered, but enjoyed reading some of the stories that others posted on the forums. To me, Boatmurdered was like the Frye vs. Takayama of Dwarf Fortress; or maybe Frye vs. Takayama was the Boatmurdered of MMA. Holds a legendary place in the memories of fans, but is actually kinda ugly and meh.

Correct me if I'm wrong (which happens quite often!), but BoatMurdered isn't a let's play, AFAIK.  A succession fort, sure.  An awesome, often hilarious tale, absolutely.  But a let's play - how so?

A Let's play is rather nebulous in definition.

I read it on the Let's Play archive, where it's decribed as a succession-style lets play. So both it and I would say that succession games are a type of group Let's play.  There's several of the more famous succession forts on there, so it seems they're considered Let's plays.

Same as most of you. Boatmurdered. Yep.
It the first thing I read before starting DF.

There are many other succession forts that are almost like lets plays such as Syrupleaf
(Personally I consider !!DRUNKFORTRESS!! a lets play on how to be a dwarf, not how to play DF. I suppose that it could also be a lets play on how to gloriously fail magma-management.)

Boatmurdered was my first introduction to the world of DF. For a while it's been my favorite but after getting turned onto it, I have to say my favorite DF Let's Play is Bravemule. Do yourself a favor and stay up all night reading and watching the beautiful writing and artwork in this.

Let's plays originated on Something Awful, where they were originally forum posts with screenshots.

CaptnDuck's voice/accent made me smile while I watched all 30 of his tutes. At half an hour for each tute, that's 15 hours.  He's made me smile for longer than my wife has.
