Dwarfiest things on real life
« on: December 11, 2013, 08:34:22 pm »

Things in real life that look like something the dwarves would do. Really dwarfy things!

For example:

However it has a notorious lack of magma for a project of that size.

What is the dwarfiest thing you have seen in real life?

Sadly, it never came to be, but had it actually happened...

This is a side-effect of dwarven animal training (hit animal with hammer until it forgets that it hates you, then lovingly cuddle it).

Not surprising it was designed by Krupp, the same company that made the Bagger 288. Apparently "Krupp" means "oversized monster machines" in German.

Oh, i remembered another:

Who thought it would be a good idea to carve up sacred land into a likeness of a man who didn't want to be photographed? Seems like an attempt at making a tourist attraction more than anything else.

{From the article linked} "In 1929, Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, initiated the project. . ."

Apparently, the leader of the same people who hold the land as sacred.  Much like any religious leader comissioning a church/mosque/temple/etc on sacred ground.

During WW II Briton was making an underground weapons factory, but the Nazis stopped bombing them so funding was cut and eventually it was abandoned.

For an extremely dwarven feat of exploration, i suggest the first ascent of humans beyond a height of 10 000m in 1901:
Quote from: copied from website
30 June 1901 - at enormous personal risk, Herr Berson and Professor Süring established the first ratified altitude record for balloons. Their baloon Preussen ascended to 35 435 feet (10 500m) above the earth.
Although oxygen cylinders with mouthpieces were used, both men suffered loss of consciousness for short periods.

Wikipedia article for those who can read german: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preussen_%28Ballon%29

Yes, both fell unconscious around the record height, but the last one to be conscious took a last altimetre reading and opened the valve to initiate the descent before he passed out. And they recovered while still in the air and landed safely.

Elders aren't exactly religious leaders, they're community leaders that have a role in religion as everyone does. I read the article, but the fact that he's Lakota doesn't mean he can't possibly be doing it for economic reasons. Lots of native groups set up economic things to benefit their tribes, but that doesn't change the fact that he's doing the same thing Crazy Horse fought to prevent. Carving up the black hills to squeeze money out of tourists is really not materially different then carving them up to get at the gold inside, it's just slightly less direct.
