If we're sticking labels everywhere and then stating it with emphasis in all caps...then I'm really unsure about joining :s

I don't like stereotypes and labels for personality and character. I don't play in things where we're designated as robots or labels of desire instead of being known as people.

Since you'll probably have time before this starts, have you seen Puella Magi Madoka Magica? It's a good start into Magical Girls. Sailor Moon is another good one, too. But they're both sort of opposite ends of the spectrum, haha.

You do realize how mean that is, don't you?  :P

...Yes. Why, yes I did. :3

But I still stand by the thing on stereotypes and labels for 'understanding' people instead of really getting to know them. >_>

I must agree with @Tiruin on this matter, even if I am but a mere spectator.

It seems that the dichotomy we call the fourth wall makes it easier to apply such simplistic heuristics to such matters.
With the prevalence and renewed interest in the standard patterns we call tropes, etiquette may decay in certain circumstances as is apparent now.

However, herein the problem lies, a character trope is, in a way a label or a heuristic, yet as characters possess both life within their text and inanimateness outside of it, the boundaries between a literary device and a stereotype become quite hard to differentiate. Many character tropes are thrown around and applied to their respective contexts, nevertheless, they see little use in the real world as real people tend to possess greater depth and facets than characters, to apply such patterns are demeaning.

The question arises: "If a trope is applied to a character before they are even used, does it limit them?" ostensibly, the answer is no. Use of a trope to describe a character does no such harm thus how can context relative to creation matter?

But, the question's implicit meaning may be worded as thus: "Are there degrees of conformity to a trope?" The answer is quite obviously yes. Ergo revealing the problem at hand. When one thinks of a trope, the quintessential examples and representations come to mind that is the sequence with a high or full degree of conformity. Hence by applying such heuristics, the mental representation of the character becomes limited to the sum of their tropes with lesser emphasis on their degree of conformity or, arguably more importantly, their transgressions. Pre-emptive application reduces them to little more than a piece of clockwork, or an automaton. A predefined entity lacking the essential life that gives them an apparent soul.

I think I am misunderstanding what's happening here. Not the first time.

I think there are two parallel discussions occurring here for some reason :P

And at least one of them is really confusing me.

I was just making a joke about magical girl stuff in general. Nothing about anyone's characters.

And I was just stating what I don't like about labels! :D

All tangents are parallel to each other and make sense at the same time.

Now.
...How do you play this thing.

I'm not even sure which person's comments are being discussed, I'm just putting my two cents in on the general premise rather than any specifics.

If it's anything like its precursor, rapid fire posts with a greater degree of player control than most other RPGs.

Personally, I find tropes a useful way to describe a character, as well a good way to nail down the basic ideas for one. The issue is when people restrict their character to tropes to the point of actually denying creativity. For instance, if your character's entire personality and storyline can be completely described by something like the following, that's a problem.

Basically, use tropes as rough guidelines, not hard and fast rules, and your story will be a lot better off for it.

TLDR:
Tropes are tools, and TV tropes will ruin your life.

I have no objections to describing a character in terms of tropes, except for when they are used before the character is used. Characters are just text after all, the risk is in which preemptive classification threatens to break their illusion and reduce them back into text.

I see about 23 unique tropes namedropped in there.

But yeah, tropes are just tools. They can help a work if used well/in the right spot, but can also just make something into bland trite if overused or used improperly.

-snip-
^ This.

To clarify: I'm totally alright with the use of said things, as long as they're used with context and not just labels in order for people to 'get' others or how they are.

Tropes are as much words as words are. They have an appended meaning to them and an origin. I work on the meaning and go in reverse to understand the use of that word (probably because English is my second language and stuff but I never thought of it like this.) then...in seeing it used flagrantly like so...

Erh...I just don't like labels. Can't explain myself that clearly.

Personally, I find tropes a useful way to describe a character, as well a good way to nail down the basic ideas for one. The issue is when people restrict their character to tropes to the point of actually denying creativity. For instance, if your character's entire personality and storyline can be completely described by something like the following, that's a problem.
...Why can't I describe things in this form. This thing has all my ideas and presented formally, with a bowtie! D:<
But where I diverge in reasoning is when people begin using tropes (with their subconscious meaning in mind) as a general descriptor for things which are better to regard holistically rather than with a 'first impression' of sorts.

I have no objections to describing a character in terms of tropes, except for when they are used before the character is used. Characters are just text after all, the risk is in which preemptive classification threatens to break their illusion and reduce them back into text.
..I play all my characters like people. :v ..Heh...oops? :P
For me. Literary text is just a simulacrum of reality--just minus the hundred thoughts we keep in our inner sanctum--and focus on the main points instead of literally everything a person does in a day. Given how the medium of text is presented, linearity is the best way to describe it (unless you fancy multiple viewpoints...).

I see about 23 unique tropes namedropped in there.
I see a ton of labels people use to ascribe to others given the colors and objects.
*psychology*
..Err, yeah! Tropes! Ahah..yeah! :D That's what I totally meant.
