~R.I.P. Nelson Mandela~
« on: December 05, 2013, 06:14:30 pm »

Nelson Mandela, anti-apartheid icon and father of modern South Africa, dies at 95.

Even though is a general thread, I'd appreciate it if arguments didn't break out. I know not everyone has the same revere for Mr. Mandela that I have, but I believe it's necessary to at least be respectful when anyone dies.

Well...
He is very dead, that's for sure. And that much is awful.

I hope we can all agree on that at least. Even when Regan, who I didn't like as political figure at all, died, I kept my mouth shut. I wasn't in deep mourning or anything, but I knew that plenty of people were, and he did have family and friends, so I let them have their grieving without any fuss.

In the UK a politician dying is often the time when criticisms are revived and the jokes are made. My favourite Thatcher joke is still from Frankie Boyle saying the money they were spending on the London state funeral for her could have been spent buying shovels for the Scottish to dig a hole into hell so they could hand her over to the devil in person. I mean, as long as you're not picketing someone's funeral, where's the harm in opening your mouth when it is so relevant?

Heh. I can't believe the "Thatcher is dead" party in Glasgow got shut down by the council.

I'd just like this thread to have some form of decency is all. Are people going to make jokes? Sure. And people are also going to be upset. People made those comments about Thatcher, and other people would have given them a good retort back, or perhaps even a blow upside the head. Like I said before, I'm doing this out of respect for everyone personally effected. I was hoping that we could share feeling and perhaps even some insight into the life of such an influential person.

Welp he's dead.
He did good things in his life though; can be happy for that.

I also want to say that this in no way means that we can't be critical of anything he's done, as long as he's criticized and analyzed as a politician respectfully. I just wouldn't be happy if people started making jokes similar to the caliber of the Margaret Thatcher one you listed.

Mmm. I can't say I didn't see it coming, but it is a blow nonetheless. Farewell Mandela.

Aside from rotting in prison for twenty-five years, getting the Nobel Peace Prize, and overall becoming Apartheid's martyr symbol, he also got to watch the movie about him while sitting next to Morgan Freeman.

Mandela had one interesting life.
