Short version: someone that's not me, because I just don't have the know-how, needs to do something to ease the tedium of military management. More detail in the following post:

In all seriousness, could you arrange for persistent uniform templates through DFHack? That's one of the big timewasters.

Already replied in said thread. Uniforms are only good when your setup is already very comfortable, it doesn't help the fact that new players + military management = terribad.

Also, can't mod UI.

That's useful info (I was thinking this morning it would be nice if certain workshops could be modded out of the ui (i.e. b w f doesn't build a forge anymore, so I could implement a custom forge building for that key combo), but mwmod does mod the ui for workshops...  Although, I don't think it mods the orginal keys...

I did ask in the dfhack irc if things like headwear or shields/bucklers could be added in as options to add to uniforms, but the dfhack community said those were ingame things that were not injectable as options to choose from.

But seriously... uniform assignments are easy once you get the hang of it... I don't get your frustration.

I even think I have the keys memorized.

m e for equipment.
u is for assign uniforms.
esc to back out
m n is for what you want in the uniforms (individual melee or individual ranged usually makes up for the tediousness of individual weapons).

generally, for archers, I add M aterial "Metal" for my headgear, and add A "Mail Shirts" to the existing uniform, and M aterial for Shields/Bucklers to "Metal".

then I esc back out
m e u to assign uniforms, I believe you select the uniform on the right side, and shift-enter to assign to a whole squad.

If you're talking about reactions/buildings, that's not modding the ui, that's adding keybindings with the in-raws CUSTOM_S and such.

I'm not talking about reactions/buildings.  i'm talking that mwmod has a new interface for workshops and forges selections.  And the order is re-arranged...

But maybe that's not what this subject is talking about.  I read "can't mod the ui" and indeed, I see instances of mwmod ui modded.  Such as "create new world (recommended)" and reordering of workshops... but maybe that's just .txt modding...

The first is probably Falconne's work. He makes GUI plugins for DFHack.

The second is really just replacing existing pieces of text in the .exe with an external tool.

You mean with the ==BLAH== stuff? Those are just dummy buildings. You can even build them.

That stuff is done with a translation patch. I also do it in Fortbent.

With DFHack. And it's not altering the UI so much as putting your own stuff in there when the time comes to do so.

I remember reading somewhere that dfhack enhancements should have their own screens vs changing the screen so as to avoid confusion with vanilla instructions.

However, it has been shown, that plugins can interject ui's into the game.  Whether one considers this "modding the ui" or merely adding to it, it certainly does change/add to the ui.
