Linux on Android install issues.
« on: November 03, 2013, 01:01:41 pm »

First and foremost, I understand this may not be possible.  If you have had success with this, please let me know!  If not, please ignore.

Since losing my computer I have been attempting to get several of my most needed programs to run on a Linux VPN on Android.  I have used Linux Deploy to install a Kali image (32 bit) on my sdcard and am using Android VPN to use the distribution.  So far everything is running great (aside from no sound support via VPN, but that can't be helped).  I have a bluetooth keyboard with a trackpoint and still have yet to see any major issues in processing power.

I finally have all of the vital stuff taken care of, but now I want to have some fun and play a bit of Dwarf Fortress.  As of yet I have had no luck in getting it to run.  My major issue seems to be the following syntax error when I attempt to run the game:

Code: [Select]
icarus@localhost:~/df_linux$ ./df
./libs/Dwarf_Fortress: 1: ./libs/Dwarf_Fortress: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Just trying to understand you here, not sure if you have your terminology quite right. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and is generally used over another medium (like the internet) to create a bridge between 2 or more physically isolated networks/computers.

From what you describe it sounds like you've used an app on your Android device to install Linux on it and are running it along side Android (This is possible because Android itself actually uses the Linux kernel) and are connecting to it over VNC or some other RDP client to get a view of the desktop?

The only way for Dwarf Fortress to work in this fashion would be if your Android device is running on one of the Intel Atom SoC's (Or basically, not an ARM Soc) since these are x86 based like your run of the mill desktops.

I haven't seen many Android devices that are powered by Intel hardware, but there are some around.

Ah, my mistake, VPN should actually be VNC..thanks for catching that.

Interesting, I do in fact have an ARM SoC.  I did not realize Intel hardware would be required for this.  While waiting for your response I attempted to install java, but it will not execute for me.  Perhaps this is a result of the same issue?

Appreciate your help!

I don't want to sound like a prick, but I don't think this thread belongs in this subforum.
Just saying.

Java should be able to work, just make sure you get the right version for ARM.

You say one thing, then do the opposite. Try to be more helpful and suggest where he should have posted it, because I had a look and can't fathom where. The closest could be the Bug forum, but ultimately this wasn't a bug anyway.
Just saying. ;)

My best bet would be somewhere in the lower forums, given that IIRC, this isn't directly related to DF.
I can't suggest anything specific to the issue since I have zero experience with Linux and Android.

I fail to see how it's not related to DF.

What does readlink /bin/sh say?
