Redwall Abbey Megaproject
« on: October 30, 2013, 08:59:57 pm »

Has any one thought of recreating Redwall Abbey from the Redwall series onto Dwarf Fortress? I've thought of it but haven't built it and probably unlikely will. If anyone has built it, would you mind posting screenshots?

No one likes working with cinnabar.

Fireclay is orangish red, that is easier to work with than cinnabar.

Seems like a fun project. Give it a go. We'll be here to laugh when you discover mercury poisoning.

Is there anyway to have a multi-species fortress that plays like a regular fortress (without interspecies romance) because in Redwall a lot of different creatures live together?

I think that there's a dfhack thing that lets you have multiple races. They remain distinct for all intents and purposes but they live and socialise together.

You can also mod creatures as dwarf castes. Only slight inconsistency is that the animals would be randomized at birth.

But, that said, a redwall mod would be pretty cool. Give animalmen civ entities with appropriate biomes and demeanors. I might do that if I feel like making a mod.

Redwall is explicitly sandstone, color notwithstanding.

Which doesn't make a whole ton of sense, to be honest. Sandstone tends to be pretty crappy as a building material.

Word of God say that the characters are as big as you want them to be. Redwall, book one, pretty much made them out to be people sized.

Edit: There was also hedgehogs, badgers, otters, squirrels, hares, and moles burr aye.

Indeed, the badger is the upper limit on size I think, unless maybe Tsarmina was a lynx instead of a bob. Still, not huge. And "as big as I want" sounds to me like I am definitely 100% correct about their size relative to the shear strength of sandstone.

Sandstone has been a common building material for at least thousands of years, and is frequently regarded as high quality; the fine-grained texture gives it a good ability to hold detail for carvings, and the (usual) primarily quartz composition gives it better long-term outdoor durability than primarily carbonate materials such as limestone or marble.  The red varieties are usually caused by trace amounts of (oxidized) iron, either coating the grains or in the cementing material between them.

Furness Abbey is a good example of an early medieval (1123) abbey made of red sandstone, in Northern England.  Despite being destroyed by Henry VIII in 1537 and having been largely unmaintained since, the ruins still give a good feel for the look and craftsmanship that may have inspired Redwall.

They were pretty clearly regular animal-sized in Redwall since a single horse was able to pull a cart containing five hundred rats.

That or horses are as big as dragons.
