Primulus. A Sci-Fi Sandbox Simulator. (WIP)
« on: October 30, 2013, 07:08:40 pm »

What is Primulus?

Primulus is a multiplayer sci-fi sandbox simulation game. Each player has a job on a research facility located on the distant moon Primulus. The game is based on rounds where the players simply do their jobs for the duration of the round. However, as they're doing their jobs, there are things going on behind the scenes that quickly turns an average day into a fight for your survival. For more information about the game, feel free to visit the website.

This game reminds me of SS13

This game is heavily inspired by Byond's Space Station 13. What makes our rendition better than SS13 and it's remakes? Nothing at all. We've taken a bit of a twist with Primulus, though, and instead of being on a space station, you're on a moon (Primulus) that's orbiting a gas giant. This will allow some planetary exploration and lots of other fun features (Like catching native alien creatures. What?). We feel it's a bit of a new dynamic that adds a lot more opportunities for the player. Hiding bodies isn't going to be as simple as throwing them into the empty void of space. More information about the game can be found under the "Primulus" section of the website.

How long have you been working on this and who are you?

Were two friends and have been working very hard to make our own Sci-Fi sandbox simulation game. We've been working consistently for about 2 months.
Mind you, we're still in the very early stages of development and everything is subject to change. Check out our website and forums and follow our blog for more information about the game at: http://primulusgame.com/

Oh look, I have a steam account.
Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

Sweet! Hope this goes places!

Any particular reason you guys went for 3d rather than 2d?

Good question. I considered first-person, top-down 2D, and platformer 2D. I even made early prototypes for all of them. In the end, I decided top-down 3D was the best option. Space Station 13 is already 2D and we wanted to spice things up a bit. When I played around with all the prototypes, top-down 3D seemed to feel the best.

I should also add that top down 3D allowed us as developers to better optimize the game. First person 3D was a good idea, but put a lot of resources in making the game look pretty and didn't leave much left for processing other things. There's a lot going on in the game at any given time and a lot variables that need to be calculated. It probably could be done in the long run, but it might not be the same feel that we looking to achieve. With the top down perspective we can put more resources in making the game as interactive as possible.

I'm just guessing it's so much tougher in terms of asset development. You spend way more time modelling, texturing, rigging and animating than you would just spriting for a little bit!

Still, very excited about this. Games need more complexity :D

Yes, asset development takes quite some time. What makes it even more tedious is there are multiple states for most objects so we have to create more than one texture per object. Glad you're excited. We are, too!

hey I know you! ;).

looks interesting. the run animation looks pretty dreadful at the moment though.
If you're in the need of some art donation hit me up on steam, I'm pretty sure you got my contact on there. I cant promise anything since I'm pretty busy with school projects and finding an internship. but perhaps I can find some time every now and then.

Unity seems like a good call too, goodluck and I'll keep checking what you guys are up to.
