Waterling/Magmaling Pressure?
« on: October 29, 2013, 06:27:03 am »

Apologies if it's been asked before.  I searched for quite a while and came up with nothing but someone elses unanswered question.

It's been stated that waterlings and magmalings spawn their respected liquids similar to how the top of a screw pump would work.  Has anyone found out if this liquid is pressurized?  This will determine if I need to build a platform in my deep well for the waterling to stand on or if I can put it in the bottom and the water will fill up.  Also quite important for figuring out if you should channel the holes for magma workshops into your artificial reservoir before or after using a magmaling.

You don't need a magma rese4voir. Just fill a tanker at the first advanced magma furnace built and use that to fill a dug out hole for the next, etc. I build a minecart stop (no tracks) next to the whole set to autodump into it, and just let a dwarf drag the tanker over, then deconstruct the stop. Voila.

Don't know about the liquid pressure. If it's like a screwpump, it should fill to it's level of output though. So it would seem a platform would be required if you want to fill a multi-level cistern.

As far I know, pressure appears when exist a lot of stored liquid (maybe I am wrong) if you want to know, just assume it gonna get pressure when you fill a big reservoir (not all people use magma just for furnaces, but using in traps and other fancy related stuff.

Also the magma "wafered" wall should be done in some point because the digging invaders (never really saw a digging monster or invasion till now, but, better be safe. You donīt want to lose a fort you expend like more than 10 years, for he get crumbled by a little digging invasion or a single digging forgotten beast or megabeast.

You can do your own tests, do a special setup just for see what happens.

It spawns new water on top, so I'd assume that its pressurized water and unpressurized magma. But I dont know for sure. Science has to be done.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=5458 occurs with active magmalings/waterlings. vertical bars/grates not hold them. i think pressure is the case

Hmm that is interesting.  I was going to try sealing them in with fortifications then letting them fill my deep reservoirs.  But if that's true they might just get pushed out, fall all those z levels and die.  I'll have to rethink how I do this.

I'll perform some Science tomorrow and try and figure out how pressure works with them.  I'll use a 4b fort that I had established but am no longer using.  I know I have a few waterlings that just happened to show up with migrants there.  Will just seal myself in, dig a bunch of different options for resevoirs, use reveal to go find some blood of armok and figure this thing out.  Only thing that may take some time is I had research active on that world so I'll need to unlock alchemist study first. Part of me is hoping for pressure in both liquids.  I'd love to be able to put a magmaling somewhere low and let it just fill up magma pipes all over the fortress.

fortifications cant hold them anyway. they produce pressure and 7/7. this making fortifications double passable ))
p.s. i use floor grates and z-levels.
p.p.s. also we have save/load deactivation
p.p.p.s. waterling able to flood many levels above self. pressure i think
