I can't do anything about it because I am allergic.

Buy a scratching post? If you're able to live with a cat, you should be able to walk through the pet store.

My sisters each have their own cat. Plus my step-mother has one too.

We used to have a ton of cats running around, to my father's frustration. My brother was watching his girlfriend's cat for so long it gave birth to two litters. We had that stupid cat for over two years, and we tried to get rid of the kittens ASAP before my sisters grew attached to any of them.

My mom used to have a de-clawed cat. She got it from a friend, and the thing wanted attention all the damn time. We eventually couldn't care for it and had it taken back.

My dad has a cat he rescued years ago. Some stray had kittens by his workplace, and everyone took one of them home. I don't remember what happened to the stray though.

Asthma= no cat

Dogs? They're fine

That makes no sense. The stuff that'd trigger the asthma would be hairs. Something dogs AND cats have.

It's not fur. It's protein. One that's not even a component of the hair - the allergen is in the cat saliva. But, since cats (and dogs, for dog allergy) lick their hair to clean themselves, the protein remains on the hair strands, so when you inhale a hair, it's likely to have the offending protein on it.

Eh. I think the litterbox is the main argument when it comes to asthma==no cat. If anything, my parents probably wouldn't wanna put up with that extra maintenance. The dog hair hasn't been an issue though.

My dad is probably more of a dog person anyway.   :P

The litterbox has nothing to do with asthma. I'm saying that as an asthmatic who'd been in charge of maintenance thereof for the entire period of cat-havery, that being... six years? I think.

I have a dog who enjoys licking cats. I enjoy that, and henceforth cats.

Oh boy, a cat thread! There's quite a lot of cats at our house. Most of them are not ours.

First off, there's our cat, Keli. He's old but still kicking. Very sweet and calm.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then there's Snælda, a younger kitten that we adopted. She was relentlessly curious and energetic, as well as a total primadonna. Yes, that's in the past tense - car accident :(
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

They got along very well.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There's also other cats from the neighborhood. First off, there's Kristófer. He comes into our house to eat. He comes into our house a lot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Keli is a pretty patient cat, all things considered.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There's also Loki, but I don't have a picture of him. He also comes into our house for food. In looks, he's like a thinner Keli. In behavior, he's a grump. He's always growling, even when he's eating. The following picture is instead of Rósa, another neighborhood cat that doesn't go into our house.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Finally, there's Rambó. He's an asshole who seems to like me, or at least my room.

Oh, for the people who don't know already: the calicos (white/orange/black coat) are, save for some very rare special cases, always female. In fact, back home we had a dynasty of neighborhood cats who could be used as a model for cat coat genetics due to that.

And in most of those special cases, the males are infertile, anyway.

All of them, really. The only situation when it happens is when the cat could be described either as female or a male, depending on what criteria you're using - such cats have a duplicate X chromosome (so, XXY). They have the Y chromosome, so they are male in appearance, but the extra X screws with their fertility.

One of our cats has some weird eye herpes that only cats can get that makes his eyes all weepy. It's not treatable as far as veterinarians can tell so we named him Crusty. It's too bad because he's the nicest and calmest cat I've ever seen. My sister found him while she was walking along a road as a kitten starving to death while laying in a puddle.

He likes having his eyes rubbed and gives a weird open mouth cat smile when you do it, I think because he remembers when we opened his stuck closed eyes when he got home. He also gets in fights sometimes with racoons or opossums who might be going after our chickens, judging from the terrible non-cat shrieks that rarely come from outside in warm weather and his resulting battle wounds for us to tend to.
