Co-op hack-n-slash games?
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:54:47 am »

So, I'm on an eternal quest to find games I can actually play with my girlfriend. She definitely liked playing Castle Crashers multiplayer, as well as Orcs Must Die, so I'm looking for any other good hack-n-slash co-op games. I recently got Divinity 2 (through humble bundle) thinking it had multiplayer- apparently doesn't. Ah well, I'll still get more enjoyment out of it than a candy bar for the same price. But, it leaves the aforementioned desire unfulfilled.

So, what are some good co-op hack-n-slash action RPG type games you would recommend? My requirements:
-PC, ideally enjoyable to play with mouse and keyboard
-Online co-op (LAN-only acceptable if it works okay with a VPN)
-Ideally, balanced to play well with just two players

Does it have to be hack and slash, or can it be hack and shoot?

One hack'n'slash that I really liked was Titan Quest. It's playable in coop, though I only tried a couple time. Kinda smashy on potions, but one of my favorite.

Assuming Diablo-likes are admissible, give Path of Exile a shot. It's free! For that matter, give Diablo 2 a shot as well.
Dead Rising 2 has co-op, and it's pretty hacky-slashy.
Most of the MAME games can be played multiplayer via Kaillera.
Dead Island is first-person, but it's very melee oriented.
Space Marine has an arena mode (waves of enemies).
Two Worlds 2 is an aRPG with a co-op campaign (though it's not that long).

Hammerwatch. It's even got a fairly feature complete beta still available if you want to test before buying.

Killing Floor is kinda like Orcs must Die except you're protecting yourself instead of a crystal or portal or whatever.
Dungeon Defenders has more in common with Orcs must Die than Killing Floor, but some would argue it's not as good.

Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale both have multiplayer, but they're RPGs based on PnP games, much as they may look similar to Diablo.

Titan Quest, Torchlight 2, Diablo (2 and 3), and Path of Exile all mentioned above fall into the same category. Path of Exile is free but its level up skill system can be pretty daunting for those unprepared, so I don't know if I can recommend it as a way to test the waters on that genre of game.

Borderlands 2.... maaaybe kinda? It's Diablo as an FPS except each character only has 1 ability.

Alien Swarm is a neat free game that's basically Left 4 Dead as a semi-top-down shooter, not sure how many people still play it though.

Yes, thank you. This is a blast in co-op and has other cooperative modes than dungeon hacking as well.

I don't really care if it's technically a slasher or shooter, but a gauntlet-like action-RPG is the kind of thing I'm looking for. Actually, we have played Killing Floor to some success. I've also played Alien Swarm, but that game really needs four players to go smoothly.

Borderlands 2 would not be a bad idea, but my girlfriend's computer is unlikely to run it smoothly. Looking back I forgot to mention, games also have to run on a pretty crap computer. Same goes for Space Marine and probably Dead Rising 2, although at a $5 price point today I'm still considering that one. On the other hand, GFWL.

I'm more interested in slightly more action oriented games than, say, Diablo, but I might give D2 and Torchlight a look. Neverwinter Nights is... hmmm, possibly not a bad idea. Would you guys highly recommend any co-op campaigns for that?

Check out Spiral Knights, by OOO. It's a pretty fun game to play with friends, basically you just run through a dungeon, shooting and slashing through enemies and bosses, while collecting loot to make better weapons so you can fight stronger enemies. I mean, there's some other stuff to do, but that's the gist of it. http://www.spiralknights.com/

I played this a while ago but never got far because, as I remember, lag made it extremely difficult to play. That was close to release though, I might check it out again.

I'd try to get more people in on killing floor, myself. One of the great things about it is that it's so well optimized that it'll run at a smooth and high FPS on basically anything, and the fact that it goes on sale frequently for like, $2.00, makes it the perfect game to gift to friends who might not otherwise play multiplayer computer games. With two people it's still ok, but it's really at its best with all 6 (I haven't played in a while, I think it's 6) and something like the fake players mod running (adds fake players past the cap to increase the spawnrate).

TF2 is another fun one with friends, but I've only played it with other people who are already good at it, so I dunno how much fun trying to introduce it to someone would be. Late night valve servers are hilarious with friends, where astoundingly derpy things are bound to happen with some of the more 'special' players. You can also join random servers running weird mods, which is also fun.

Terraria has multiplayer, but I haven't played it, so I can't particularly endorse it. It's a fun game though, and goes on sale often (may be a while, since it just updated).

There are of course several billion MOBAs out now to choose from, but I'd avoid letting them eat your soul if they haven't already.

Starcraft II has some fun mods, but it's expensive, clunky, blizzardly, and otherwise useless if you don't like RTS.

Dungeon defenders is ok, but you've already mentioned orcs must die, I'd say that's the better game.

Dungeon Siege 1 might be of interest, but I thought it was a bit simplistic.
