Space Development Agency (design suggestion game)
« on: October 03, 2013, 03:35:05 pm »

Forty years ago, the space-faring Lamarckians arrived on planet earth. We were put under forty years of Lamarckian Yoke, until we finally regained our freedom as we finally proved to the Lamarckians that we are ungovernable, and will fight for our freedom at all costs.

The Lamarckians left us with the all-important piece of space-faring technology - the Hyperspace Engine, as well as myriad of innovations that would need a century to be developed independently. Stars that were tens of Lightyears away can now be reached within a year or so, and the new united world government has now appointed you to head the all-new Space Development Agency, which will be responsible for our space exploration, exploitation, expansion, and finally extermination of Lamarckians and anything that stands in our path.

For Humankind.

Within one year of its establishment, the Government has arranged for the following resources for the Agency:

Spoiler: Supplies (click to show/hide)

Notes:

I have to use a lot of abstractions in this game: after all I set it IN SPACE. That said it is still in the vein of various similar games, and hopefully we will enjoy this.

I'm the sole judge of feasibility of any technology or engineering, so please explain as clearly as possible.

Rules:

Shamelessly coped from ebbor.

1. All proposals must be bolded
2. All proposals must have an unique number
-In case of accidental duplication, please split in 6a and 6b, or add one to the end of the queue. Don't move up everything else. That causes confusion
3. All proposals must be marked as a Large, Medium or Small project.
4. Design proposals begin at 1, for each year
-Proposals continued from last year will be placed in italics, and include the year before the number. (Only do this for proposals that were worked upon).
5. Production proposals begin at A, for each year.
6. Other proposals, like reorganization of the team or political war plan suggestions will be marked using the greek alphabet
7. Proposals and Votes are unlimited. Please don't abuse this.
8. Each proposal that doesn't follow these rules will be terminated with extreme prejudice.
Example: 1. I propose we mount lasers on sharks
1920:1 Seeing as the project wasn't finished last year due to a shark shortage, I propose we continue with mutated Sea Bass

1: All rules for proposals apply except the following.
2: Modifications to proposals will have a number in the format of proposal.sub-proposal.
3: A modification may be supportive (default) or a counter (must be explicit).
4: You can vote for a Proposal and it's supportive subproposal, but not for a proposal and it's counter subproposal.
1.1 I think we should go all the way and mount the National Ignition Facility on the head of a sharkasourus.
1.2 I counter propose that we should instead create lasers that shoot beams composed of sharks.

Format for votes
1: you must specify the proposal number explicitly.
2: you must use the word vote.
3: Each user should make all of their votes with one post if possible
4. You should edit in your vote into the proposal tracker (template below). Always use the latest quoted example.

Α. Combine teams C and D into a Medium team, then combine team C (Medium) with B to form a Large team. Combine two Large teams.
1. Extralarge team focuses on designing hyperspace drive capable to be used in-atmosphere.

these games are hell on earth to traverse so i'm just going to leave this here while it's still not a mess

First, proposal A is clearly a reorganization proposal, and therefore needs to be marked with a greek letter, in this case Alpha.

Secondly: Why would you even want to use hyperspace in atmosphere. That thing goes at 10c. Aside from the structural problems, there's zero use.

Third: Let's wait for the game to be started.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Note for hyperspace:

Basically, as I dictates, smaller crafts are capable for higher grades of hyperspace as large bubbles tend to ripple up. The Jake is tested at 50c; if you use the classical message minishuttle (less than a tonne) it can be increased to 1kc upwards without much modification

if you can use hyperspace in the atmosphere, you can create transport networks on drugs. which as i'd like to think would boost planetary material production and give us access to building things like a spaceport that's not good enough only for shuttles

if you use hyperspace in the atmosphere whatever you're in turns into a gas...

Most atmospheres are gas. More importantly, light speed in atmosphere will very rapidly blow up a planet. Friction and all that jizz.

Common sense implies you to use the lowercase, or phonetic notations of Alpha, considering Production proposals are marked with an uppercase Latin alphabet letter. Hence, there would be no difference.

Hyperspace theory in this game is not dissimilar to EVE's shock bubbles. For some reason, Lighter objects can maintain faster bubbles, and while it is far from instantaneous, and limits the size of governments (since you just can't effectively rule a populace if everything need a year to reach the other side), it makes sense for the purpose of this game.

You do have a crude understanding of hyperspace theory, but making reliable engines for that is another matter.

Anyway I need some filtering/grouping of suggestions and voting or I'll just go on with EVERY single suggestion.

I meant the rocket/plane/whatever would turn into a gas and I was assuming that it would take a while to accelerate to the speed required to blow up most planets.

2.1. Reverse-engineer the hyperdrive engine, to acquire a better understanding of how they work.

3. Design a small, unmanned probe with hyperdrive capability. It holds just enough hyperdrive fuel to reach the nearest dozen stars or so, and enough sublight fuel to travel around a solar system at least once. It isn't intended to return to our solar system on its own power, but it does have a transponder in case we decide to retrieve it. The data it gathers is transmitted back to its launch point. (Medium)

Vote for 2.1, 3.

(Are we going with ebbor's rule that you have to explicitly vote for your own suggestions?)

The main resources we seem to be lacking are energy related. Any kind of hyper-drive that works in an atmosphere may be useful for supply routes in the short term but, in the long term we want to utilize extraterrestrial resources. many of which don't have an atmosphere.
because of this I propose the following

4. research an exponential self-sustaining process that converts the entire mass of the planet mercury into a dyson sphere.

4.1. before constructing the dyson sphere send out self-replicating probes based on technology necessary to manufacture a dyson sphere to 30 of the nearest galaxies, then 30 of the nearest stars which in turn create 30 new probes to explore new stars and galaxies ect. these will be used for information gathering and exploration.

vote for 4,4.1
