No sound on my TV when using HDMI-DVI [Solved]
« on: September 21, 2013, 10:01:57 am »

So, I posted about this in the WTF thread but figured there was a bigger chance of getting help if posting here. I have been using my TV connected to my PC with a hdmi cable with a DVI adapter to watch YouTube and Twitch stuff for quite a while (years), but for a while now I am unable to get the sound to play, I can in fact not even select my TV as standard output anymore, the option is greyed out.

I am assuming this is some kind of driver issue so I have made sure my graphics card drivers are up to date and also that I have the latest realtek sound drivers (the tv is set to use the amd drivers though but it couldn't hurt to try). So far, no dice. I have tried every port on my tv and both of the ports on my PC and no luck.

My tv is a samsung somethingorother and the graphics card in question is an HD5970, now running the latest drivers.

My next step is to try to plug the HDMI cable into my laptop and see if I can get audio that way, if that is the case I guess the adapter could be broken in some way that only affects the audio signal but I figured I'd make the post before I run out of all options if this is something someone else has encountered.

Yup HDMI from my laptop works fine so it is not the cable or the tv.

It could be an issue with Protected Media Path

If the driver is untrusted, Windows wont allow the driver to communicate certain things over the HDMI port.
Consequently, this is also why the RIAA/MPAA/Media Whores of the world are so worried about the "Analog Hole"

Essentially, with HDMI and the complicit assistance of software and OS makers, they can enforce their idea of what media protection is (Oh noez! we cant verify that driver/cable/TV! No content for you!), and get sweaty panties over the idea that all somebody needs to do is just run an analog feed to get rid of their restriction.

This has caused intense lobbying pressure in congress (in the US) and in appropriate government bodies abroad, to "Close the analog hole", and to "Be tougher on media piracy", where "Piracy" is basically defined as any media access they don't authorize. (and where if Protected Media Path and pals are causing you trouble, for legitimate playback, circumventing the problem to get the playback back is considered unauthorized view, and a violation in their twisted little minds.)

Personally, i'd test this idea by booting into a linux liveCD, like Mint's installer (just dont install!) or with Knoppix (LiveCD from the go) and see if the audio works over HDMI there. Linux doesnt enforce Protected Media Path to my knowledge, and if that is the issue, will stand out quite clearly.

Not just that actually, Audio over DVI isn't really supported and probably your tv doesn't take audio signals through that.

That's true-- Though the OP did claim that it "Used to work", which makes me question that.

HDMI-DVI can carry audio signals and as I said, it worked but a month or so ago for me without issues. Nothing has changed in the setup other than newer radeon drivers. I doubt the whole Protected Path Issue since my laptop running Win 7 (and a radeon card albeit with a much older version of catalyst) works fine when connected to the TV, so unless it is something ATI has done with the last few driver updates it ain't that.

Wait, you can update your graphics driver on your laptop? Last i check barely any of the manufacturers allow you to do that only with their crummy ass outdated versions. You aren't using a modded driver are you?

So if anyones interested the issue is solved now. I got a friend of mine to bring over a bunch of DVI-HDMI adapters and after trying several of them, one suddenly worked. One with the ATI logo on it. It seems that in some ATI driver update they introduced some retarded bullshit that makes you use an "official" adapter for the card to send any sound to the tv.

I would assume so. I am running 13.9 and now that I am using an "ati" dvi-hdmi adapter it works.
