You groan audibly, and shake the last vestige of unconsciousness away. The buzz of conversation in the room dies and you feel your mother squeeze your hand in affection.
Mustering what royal dignity you can, you raise yourself to sitting. "I'm fine, the palace healers have done their work well."
One such healer speaks up. "Your wounds were thankfully superficial in large part, there was little that needed doing. You will be sore and maybe a little weak for a day or two, but on the whole fine."
You nod in thanks, and turn your attention to the King. "Father, do you think we can talk about my assailants?"

Your Father nods solemnly. "I think we ought to have fewer bodies around, my son is healed and warded, and those here to see him well have seen him. So begone." There is some muttering, but the room is mostly silent as the varied nobles and palace attendants shuffle out of the room. Ritalia lingers briefly, but your father gives her a stern look and her handmaidens escort her away. Soon, left in the room are your parents, Barick, the court mage Arekmar, and Sir Gerald. When the door to your chamber is firmly closed, your father begins to speak to you. "You've only been out a few hours. Fortunatly when you entered Barick into the tournament he had the foresight to hire men to watch your back. If he hadn't you would have probably been killed. Without Barick or the knights of the crown to protect you during the tourney the assassins couldn't have picked a better time."

You cut in at that. "Yes, the assassins, what about them? Do we know anything about them? Did we capture any?" To some degree, you feel fear. You've never been in real danger before, and your first brush with it has been sobering.

Sir Gerald's eyes are cold, his features hard. "The mercenary who rescued you left none alive, save for one who may have escaped. Of the dead we know that one was a palace servant, a lowborn man who had been in the service of the royal family for over a decade and a half. The woman who lured you is a member of a landless noble family, one who fell at the end of the last dynasty; she and her brother dissapeared nearly a month ago. She's been killed, but her brother may be involved."

Your father, raises the broken pin. His mouth drawn tight, holding back a hint of a snarl. "They brought varied weapons, of different kinds and materials. They couldn't know what weapons might work around the spells of the palace wardens, but that they used this weapon against you, a golden pin, is a grievous insult." This particular reference is lost on you, but your father explains. "It's a relatively well kept secret, but your great grandfather killed the last Aikeen king in his sleep. He stabbed him in the throat with a golden pin much like this one."

Arekmar takes over at that, as he speaks it becomes clear he's the most level and calm person in the room. "The number of people who have access to this information is small, which has disturbing implications. Either someone within the inner circle of the royal family is rather loose with royal secrets, or is personally involved. It's possible this is a coincidence, but unlikely."

May it be forever chronicolised that golden insult was sent our way and re-packaged it to the nearest morgue.

Well then facts just facts: Lured by a landless noble who died, assailed by deadmen who refuese to tell tales, and landless noble brother. It's time for a hunt and this time bring him in alive. Once we find him we follow the money and rumors back to the inner circle and arrange our own party. *Turn to Barick* Barick much that has transpired could have been avoided had i stayed with you. This is partly my fault im sorry.

We need to learn the art of wizardry.

Not gonna lie that sounds better. Maybe we can specialize into some anti assassination magic.

Example: globe of air that blows away arrows and smells attackers. Or maybe blood magic although it could be VERY illegal and controversial.

You turn to Barick. "I feel i owe you an apology. I should have simply waited for you before eagerly rushing off into danger. I also ought to offer my congratulations on representing me so well in the tourney, you won us both glory today."

Your father frowns, and rises impatiently, preparing to leave the room. "The wedding is tomorrow, so for that at least you should be safe. All the same i will have you under gaurd by sword and spell." He makes for the door, but before leaving turns around and parts with one last word. "You should see that noble boy who defended you rewarded, i'll leave the details to you. Bring it up with the royal steward and i'm sure he'll have some ideas. Maybe we can provide him with an estate, or an honorary position at court, whatever you decide is best." And at that, the King leaves, Arekmar and Gerald at his heels.

The queen scowls at the departure of your father, but says nothing. Barick, sinks into a chair beside you, and for a long moment it is silent. During the silence, Barick seems to be struggling with something internally, his brow furrowed, his lips barely moving. You consider asking him what's wrong, but he breaks the silence. "I have been told by the King not to mention either of these things, but i think it best i tell you everything."
Again, there is silence for a long moment. Your mother nods sagely, seeming to know what is coming. "This is the second attempt on your life. The first was made by some courtier, an upjumped noble, he paid a servant to bring a book rigged to explode into your chambers. When he was discovered he jumped out the window of a tower. After that your father had me start going into the lowtown, make sure that if you need to you can escape the city, or have peasants and street toughs in your hands if you need to fight. I'm telling you this to make it clear to you, i'm not your father's man anymore, i'm yours."

The woman who lured you is a member of a landless noble family, one who fell at the end of the last dynasty

That explains the woman that was trying to mind control us earlier plus doesn't that month of disappearance correlate from our departure from Adelbert?

____

Oh, boy there must be some serious things being flung around for Barick to switch his loyalty to us.

We need to learn the art of wizardry.
We do have a book about mind magic, we should eventually start taking cracks at it. On the topic about magic, I disagree with fire magic it is too flashy and reveals your position when you start throwing fireballs. However, wind magic would be a lot more useful when you can send gusts of invisible death to your enemy.

What noble boy are they talking about?

I see. well good thing i had gotten started on those buisnesses beforehand. More pressing matters during the tourney you and that other knight had an exchange of words. I prefer that their be no secrets between us Barick.

Whether he says yes or no just go along with it.

Mom what do you think i should do? I can't stay in this palace and i still have other duties that need attendance after the wedding.

If he did how about an estate? I think that noble didn't have land so a small estate where can administer could be good for him. I'm assuming were landing the guy rather than give him some lousy title to bug us at court.

I think it is better to talk to him to see what are his skills are. You never know he might not be like most nobles. I think we should also talk to the servant's family.

You give some thought to the matter of the noble boy. Serles of House Madagar, a very minor but loyal house. His grandfather is a baron, a vassal to your father; and he's the thirdborn son to a Knight. He himself has done very little of import before today, his father sent him to learn diplomacy in the king's court, and most of that time he's spent as a toady to you. You suppose it says something that he did not hesitate to take up his sword in defence of you, but beyond that he's never shown himself particularly capable in many areas. He *was* caught in dalliance with a palace maid, but he's sworn to never do anything of the sort again. Landing him would be a generous reward, perhaps giving him some fishing village or a bit of farmland as a vassal of the king, or perhaps even a vassal of yourself if you can convince the steward. A more modest reward might include the honorary title "Royal Protector", which comes with a permanent court position and a small stipend. You suppose you could also try making him a squire to someone high profile, or secure a position for him as a city official when he reaches age.

However, other matters need attending to as well. "Barick, in the tourney you seemed to have an exchange with one of Penrod's knights. Is there anything i need to know?"

Barick grimaces and sighs, his teeth gritting as he begins to speak. "Some years ago, we knew eachother, or rather, i knew his brother. He was killed, and i was blamed for his death. It's rather complicated, i expect he will challenge me to single combat before he leaves the country." You sigh audibly at that. You don't want this to turn into a political liability, but it's possible it could. It might be wise to keep Barick away when dealing with the Adalbert nobles, but then... there is still the matter of needing protection.

"Mother, do you have any advice? My life just became much more complicated."

She smiles sadly. "I don't think it has, but i do think that you have a better idea of how complicated it truly is." She gives your hand a squeeze, before continuing on. "Your father will do what he can to keep knowledge of what happened to a minimum, but it will spread. In the meantime, you cannot afford to look afraid, you must be brave son, your enemies will look to pounce on any weakness you show." She hesitates, and the next words she speaks with great trepidation. "Especially if you seek to become King."

Well next time the nobles see us let's make sure we have a creepy smile on so they know were not worried about assassins.

Let's just sit back, read some of our books on magic, and maybe doodle some things.

Options for Raynor:

1. We build a reputation that is similar to Vlad the Impaler, so none of our enemies will dare fuck with us. This can be accomplished with mind magic, or illusions.

2. Spy Network, Barick has already got some thugs on the street we could expand this.

3. We continue to make allies and friends from youngest noble to lowliest of peasants. This way we have friends/allies in the more seeder places and some in higher places.

Anyways, we should continue expanding a metalworking industry because we are still gunning for the Island Nation. We also have some good excuses to hire teachers about offensive and defensive magic now. Also, how is that gift going for Ritalia?

I think we should give that noble that saved us Royal Protector because it is another pawn we could use in the court. Better yet a position within the city guard because you never know when you might need someone who command the quite a bit of man power to perform a coup.

+1

The minor noble is VERY bad at diplomacy as we have seen and has a reputation for
Patronizing with women. I think we should vassalise him as a village chief/lowly baron.

Using that small plot of land we can create a large building for the leaders for our future spy network.

We should definitely start with 1 but more of a upright dictatorship thing than just brute force. say/act more like "if the fiery world wishes my death by corrupting the unfortunate than so be it. {{the gods name}} will be on my side and i will see to it that the Kingdom will continue to move forward for future prosperity and all included in the crowns supporters". GM/viewers can edit that but no Mass killings for the slightest thing that's just going to create fear and fear isn't loyalty.

Expanding the spy network would also be good in finding out who is gunning for us and exposing them
For political prestige.

Definitely expand our metal industry for the upcoming war we need to make sure our Kelshan Allies are armed to the teeth. Also inquire about the leader of the rebellion.

We should also to keeping an eye on the kings concubine in case she wants to stop us from cornering her spice industry. Who knows maybe she pulled strings for the rebellion to start and then raised the prices of Kelshan spices which she could make under the noses of everyone.
