It's going to take me a day or so to create a proper update here. I've been immersing myself into finishing a draft for a novel and otherwise seeking non-freelance-employment. I'm setting aside tomorrow in large part to write so that's probably when i will get it done.

Quote
The last bit of business- let's explore the bureaucracy that the nation currently utilizes to function. How does it work? Who reports to who? Now, of course, there is the nobility. But alongside them should be a legion of clerical staff, and they probably report to some central authority in the palace, who reports to the King. I recommend that we look at this bureaucracy, and come up with a holistic plan to improve it along with any advisers that we have.

Pleased to have a question. I'm going to rule Raynor already knows this, being as well educated as he is.
Analysse is in large part a traditional feudal state, with a King at it's head. The King has various vassals across all ranks including dukes, counts, barons, knights and even lowborn mayors, most of which have their own vassals in turn. All of these vassals are expected to enforce the kings law, provide taxes and come to war should their liege call for it. There are seven provinces(all of which have two de jure duchies, though some duchys do not have dukes and instead have counts and barons which answer directly to the king), six of which have grand stewards whose sole duty is to be a removed party who can report on current events within each of the provinces. A seventh grand steward exists, and this steward's duty is to manage the day to day affairs of the seventh province, the crownland.

The crownland is the territory passed from King to King, and by law he has absolute authority over the whole of it. In truth however the duty of managing this province falls to the grand steward and respective vassal stewards. Vassal stewards act in large part as a noble vassal might, albeit with less authority or privilege. The great majority of taxes exacted by these stewards technically go to the royal treasury only to be cycled back for the stewards to spend as they see fit. The oversight of peers and superiors prevents corruption among these stewards, and in large part the funds are allocated quite efficiently back into the province. The lowest rank of these stewards are the Squire-Stewards. Knights of the Crown technically have titles and lands of their own, but have really no authority over these lands. Instead the Squire Stewards manage the lands of their knights, and pay a sort of double tax, one to the king and another to the knights who they supply with arms and armor.

The king also has a number of other officials who help advise him and attend to his affairs. Count Revar is the royal master of coin and manages the crown's finances, Knight Commander Gerald sees over military preparedness of the nation, each of the three orders of magic has a mage which advises the king on magical affairs. Each of these advisors and stewards have their own host of scribes, historians, scholars and experts who in turn advise them.

Across the entirety of the country Cities are a complicated political factor. Ancient laws which originate from when Analysse was a single city state are still in place, and give cities a sort of autonomy and authority of their own. Towns tend to be controlled either by knights or lowborn mayors who pledge loyalty to a higher lord, however, when a town is arbitrarily judged large enough to be deemed a "city" a council of lords is both elected and appointed. These lords tend to be the most influential people who live within the city, including nobles, merchants, lowborn elders and even simply particularly popular individuals. These lords are collectively a single vassal to a higher authority, and underneath them have a variety of minor officials with authority over their own small part of the city, with authority to raise a militia gaurd in relation to the population of their part of the city.

Good to see you back and good luck on your novel. May i as what it's about?

Oh and maybe we should draw up a new agreement that specifies what a city is. Must have an economy that provides X amount of taxes as well as a prime export. something like that.

You make the decision to hold back on your gift for the time being, deciding it best to express any support to penrod privately rather than publicly. It may seem rude to some particularly observant nobles, but then it could also be taken as an expression of solidarity with those with grudges against the Adalbertian prince of Koringberg. You have committed to helping provide an escort for the prince and your sister back to Adalbert, so there shall be plenty of oppurtunities to give your gift and support privately.
However, all the same, appearances must be kept, so you approach the wedding couple and offer your heartfelt congratulations, though you keep it brief and professional. A proper goodbye will have to be spoken later.

The festivities at the feast are quite remarkable. A team of acrobats collectively juggle knives between one another while performing all manner of tumbling manoeuvres; in one moment you were tricked by the skilled performers to believe that a man had accidentally been stabbed in the mouth, but he reveals he had caught the knife with his teeth. Two sets of illusionist twins create mock battles of powerful and mythical creatures battling one another, all the while making passing jabs at children's fey tales. Circus duellists have thrilling sword fights after demonstrating the sharpness of their blades by cutting melons placed on one another's bare stomachs. All the while the most talented musicians give musical accompaniment to all of these acts.

Your father, words slightly slurred but voice steady and confident gives a speech, assuring listeners that both Analysse and Koringberg will benefit from the power of one another, that no other two neighboring nations could hope to combine forces to be as mighty as this alliance. Your thoughts turn to the now fractured Keshlan empire, and wonder if that will be true much longer, or if it will be true at all.

...

The wedding couple retires and the party dissipates, giving you an excuse to escape the chatter of your noble hangers-on. You turn your attention to your future, and the power you will need. There are clearly those who wish you dead, and it occurs to you that whatever military and clandestine power you can muster is tenuous at best. Mercenaries and the promised charity and loyalty of allies is all you have to muster. The largest contributor to your lack of power is that you have no title. A single vassal gives you credit but he is a lone knight of the sail, and he himself serves a lord with no land to his name. Your father is your best option to the acquisition of a title, you arn't of age yet but you plan on inheriting the crown one day, and a future king must have soldiers and wealth to enforce his claim, any ill wind could turn promises into ash.
Filled with urgency to be prepared you send word to your preferred armorsmith that you want subtle armor prepared, able to be worn under clothes and enchanted to be as unobtrusive as possible. In the night you discuss with Barick that you want loyal and reliable men at arms to be gathered to your service. Not mercanaries but career soldiers and at the worst hedge knights. Barick does explain that his contacts tend to be more vagabond and mercanary than loyal and soldierly but that he will do what he can. It seems on that score that you will have to do legwork of your own in order to gather a proper retinue, which is not unexpected.

You consider how to get in touch with the common people. Charity certainly seems like it would go well with the commonfolk, but what kind of charity would you give? What good works would you do? To your understanding the clergy of the mother-half of the national religion- traditionally handle charity work, with a focus on orphans and those who have experienced great tragedy.

The honeymoon of the wedding couple will continue well into the day tomorrow, and the day after that shall be the second half of the tourney held in Penrod and Ritalia's honor. It's worth considering how you will approach this tourney, which shall be identical in nature to the first half. Mother and father does the king love tourneys. After that the wedded couple will depart for their home, with you and your own escort in tow, unless you choose to change that plan suddenly.

Have an armed escort to the Church to talk with the mother's priest's or priestess so that we can gauge how things work their. Ask them about what they do and charity. See if we can learn a bit more about our faith in the process.

I'm firmly of the belief that everyone is one kind of nerd or another. Even sports could be considered a fandom. Anyway, the novel i'm currently working on is industrial revolution era fantasy, exploring the effects of magic on a developing society both politically and sociologically.

Politics and sociology? How did you know i like reading that stuff?!?

Psychology is my major in school but political science is also an interest of mine. Maybe when it's done you can send me a link to buy it? Have you had any prior publishing's?

(Hey. Can we get a Character Status Update on the Next Turn?)

-First Off, send a message to your new Brother-in-law's steward, or whoever is taking messages for him while he is busy on his Honeymoon, that you would like to host a small private dinner for them on the tournament night. Mention you have an interesting gift that you would like to give him away from the public eye. We should meet the couple in private before we leave town anyway.

-We should arrange a meeting between Gerald and Barrick. Make sure there are no hard feelings between them.

-Be a good sport, and congratulate your half-brother for beating your Champion.

-Reading the OP, I noticed that the Consort is Half Keshelian. This could be a game changer. Ask your guild contacts what they know about her.

-It looks like the secret of our War-Magic is getting out of the bag. We might as well own it, and feed any rumors we encounter about the assassination attempt while exaggerating and playing up our talent as a War-Mage. Keep the Scrying quiet.

-On that note, see if our new Magical Bodyguard would be willing to offer us lessons more advanced than what we have been getting.

If you are on these forums, there is a very good chance you like Dwarf Fortress. If you like Dwarf Fortress, their is a very good chance you have at least a passing interest in Politics and Sociology.

No good sporting because he avoids us.
An honestly i'd like it if our Prince Raynor could become a Mesmer like charcter like in Guild wars 2. The ones that create a bunch of clones via glamour but even the fakes shoot damaging beams. Causing bleeds, concussions, burning, and confusion. Heck if we get really good we can hide in shadows and let our copies do the talking in tables in case and jump out when the ambushes come for our heads. So definetly yes about the magic tutelage.

eh w.e about the rest but asking our contacts in the Kelshan nobles about the Consort could be good.

An before i forget mlam maybe a contacts list updates with who we know. not just dead people and friends but current suspicious enemies.

EDIT: Bump please don't let this die it's how i get my medieval fix. Plus this game reminds me of another {can't remember the name}.
