Necromancer generals
« on: September 07, 2013, 04:03:33 am »

Some legends mode reading led me to some unimportant, but intriguing questions.
Why is the first general of any Dwarven civ almost always a necromancer? Why are there no more necromancer generals after him? Why are there no necromancer kings/queens?

I always get a bunch of necromancer kings/queens, can't say I've ever noticed a necro general before. Random is random :>

(You might have a point about them getting spawned a bit too early sometimes, but I guess that's needed to make sure you don't have to gen a long world to access all the features of the game)

Interesting. Have someone actually had necromancer king in his fortress? Heard a lot about vampire kings, but not about necromancers.

I don't think that can happen in play, since as far as I know, whenever someone takes up necromancy they leave their civ to either build a necro tower or become an apprentice at one, and are thereafter no longer part of their old civ. I'm unsure whether they are actually exiled or choose to leave their old people behind.

I'm not sure if someone can take up necromancy in play at all. And judging by what Legends say, necromancer generals aren't exiled. Tend to win a lot of battles, too.

Kings can be necromancers and vampires so I doubt there is anything stopping necromancers from becoming generals.
Heck, if even demons can become kings and liaisons I see no problem with necromancer ones.

What I meant was getting a necro king to come to your fort ^^

As for the rest, I've never seen a necro not leave their old civ behind when taking up necromancy, so I was going with the assumption that's intended. But if as you say they sometimes stick around and keep their old position then that's cool I guess. Question is if it's a bug or not, necros don't really feel like they fit the whole masquerading as normal until you've subjected the populace to not dare oppress you that vamps do imo :>

No, definitely seen a lot of "attackers were led by dwarf necromancer". Never seen any necromancer kings/queens, though, even in Legends, so can't say anything about getting them into your fort.

From what I've noticed, when someone becomes a ghost or a necromancer it becomes a part of their name. It's retroactive too, so older legend entries from before their change will still refer to them as a necromancer, even if they weren't at the time. This is likely what you are seeing in the legends entries. Though it may be worth checking when exactly they learned their secrets of life and death, to be certain.

So they won't show up in your fort, to my knowledge, unless you embark next to their tower.

Scrap that, someone has had a necromancer king consort.
