Can you send your soldiers to follow someone?
« on: September 02, 2013, 11:08:48 am »

I want to protect foreign Diplomats that come to my fortress (Using DFHack I activated all of them). For a few years, when I only had to care about the surface, a "preventive" genocide of everything that moves was good enough but...

...Since I discovered a natural cave with edge entrances, sometimes, the diplomats decide it's fun to visit the underground marvels on their way out. So there is not an easy way to predict the path they are going to follow so...

...Is there a way to order a squad of soldiers to follow someone around?...

...I mean something simple like the kill command in the squad order menu but... Without the killing part ;).

I wish there was, but unfortunately no, there is no such option.

I use the military to escort the elves to the fort entrance so that an ambush doesn't drive them off.

Thanks for the fast reply. Too bad, because the AI does it already (Dogs following hunters, Diplomats following Leaders, etc). I will search the suggestion forum just in the improbable case this feature haven't been suggested gazillion times already :) for a future version.

it would also be nice for keeping an eye on suspected were-beast or vampire infections. Can't you just close the gate to underground for a bit to prevent them from leaving through there?

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Yes... Blocking Cave access is one of the things I'm forced to do atm (I have to do it anyways to prevent the anoying "collect webs pathing issue"), but...

...A proper Escort command is something that makes sense regarding all military activities. It's just that after seeing all the coding effort behind the feature rich alert+burrow+schedule and the pressence of the kill-by-list squad command, I found weird that a "simpler" approach like the one I was looking for wasn't available, so I thought that was there but, as a newbie on all DF related things, I simply was missing something.

You could just turn off auto collect webs in the 'o'rders menu, 'W'orkshops section. Though if you're trying to get your dwarves to collect from a specific area, yeah......
