Co-op/MP game suggestions?
« on: August 28, 2013, 07:11:42 pm »

Looking around for something good for use with younger (16yrs) sibling(s).

Criteria:
Plot/directed sandbox is a plus
More building/exploring/coop, less pvp is agreed by all parties

They like: Minecraft & cubeworld, borderlands, team fortress 2 "because it's funny", various singleplayer games, portal, etc
They don't like: 'Repetitive' stuff such as chivalry, apparently, and mmorpgs

I've got an open mind, & if it's good & MP I can convince them.
PC preferred, cheaper is better.
What's the bay playing?

-> other games
for better responses
You can move your own threads with a button in the bottom left corner.

Have they checked out Don't Starve? It's single player, much in common with Minecraft but very different. Sandbox, reasonably clear direction, plenty of building and exploring. Some people find it repetitive, but it's certainly less repetitive than Minecraft survival mode.

Nah, gotta be multiplayer, but thank ye kindly.

Huh, didn't know you could do that. Figured since it isn't a specific game, general discussion might be appropriate. Wilco in the morning.

Just throwing it out there for E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy.
I think the best way I've seen it described is a mixture of Killing Floor and Deus Ex.
(Though, it's a lot less repetitive than Killing Floor is, imho.)

I've not tried it yet, but it seems like if you're looking for a challenge to sink your teamwork skills into, then turning the difficulty up a little bit is a must-do.
(And, it would seem, turn the detection settings down if you value a stealth tactic.)

Check out terrafirmacraft mod for minecraft, its quite a bit harder than vanilla and you'll have to work together. though maybe not so good if they dont like learning curves (ie keep wiki open 24/7)

Erm... Left 4 Dead? Either will do fine, although I prefer the 1st one.

They don't like: 'Repetitive' stuff

I've been playing Payday 2 recently, it's pretty fun. Not 100% sure how repetetive it can be but it's got some dynamic stuff in it so that it doens't play out exactly the same way twice very often.

-Terraria might be worth a look. It has a lot in common with Minecraft.
-Castle Crashers is a fun side scrolling beat-em-up that is best enjoyed in co-op.
-Trine 2 is a story driven puzzle platformer that is pretty fun to play co-op (not sure if the first one had online multiplayer).
- Magicka is a sort of diablo-esque game (in that it is an isometric action-rpg-thing). It is terribly silly and more than a little chaotic.

No offense but I'm going to disagree with this recommendation.  While I haven't played it in years, when I played it before E.Y.E. was a cool idea with poor execution. It had a lot of technical problems and overly complicated systems that were broken.  The leveling system was heavily flawed, game balance was all over the place, enemies spawned infinitely with no regard to the player's current location or the amount of enemies currently in the level, the hub area was needlessly huge, the translation was bizarre, and multiplayer connection is unreliable at best.  Very good sense of style, but that wasn't enough for me.

If someone wants to come in and say all those issues have been fixed that's fine.  But back near release my experience was strongly negative.

L4D2 is a great game.  Challenging without being stressful, and friendly fire scales with difficulty so you should be able to get fun out of it even if everyone sucks.  Another recommendation I would make is Monaco, a top down heist game with minimalistic gameplay that can nonetheless get pretty crazy.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Payday 2. But it may be too repetitive for them.

The first Half-Life has the Sven Co-Op mod, which is tons of fun from what little I've played of it.

Just Cause 2.

It's singleplayer, but the multiplayer mod I've seen looks amazing. I've never played online, though.

There's also Half-Life 2's Synergy and Obsidian Conflict, but neither of those are quite as much silly fun.
